Surft and Turf: Track and Field

The track and field teams competed in the Tufts Invitational Meet and a non-scoring meet at Wesleyan over winter break.

Women

The women placed fourth of 11 teams at the Tufts Invitational, dominating the 800 with three of the top four times. Keri Lambert ’13 won by 11 seconds, followed by sophomores Jaya Tripathi and Bridget Bennett in third and fourth, respectively.
Jessie Kaliski ’15 won the 5,000-meter run with runner-up Abby Hopper ’13 just five seconds behind. Melissa Sullivan ’12 and Lauren Almeida ’13 placed fifth and sixth in the 1,000. Lisa Walker ’14, Lizzy Briskin ’15 and Amy Dao ’14 took sixth, seventh and eighth in a tight race in the mile, finishing just three seconds apart.

Naomi Bates ’14 placed third in both the 60-meter hurdles and the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Lambert, Almeida, Dao and Sullivan won the 4x800 relay, while Abraelle Shirley ‘15, Jade McKnight ’13, Shyloe Jones ’14 and Beth Hall ’14 took third in the 4x200.

Bates led the women at Wesleyan with a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash, second place in the 60-meter hurdles and third place in the triple jump. Bates, Almeida, Lambert and Sullivan combined for fifth in the 4x400 relay. Sullivan and Almedia finished first and third in the 800, while Briskin and Marlis Gnirke ’15 clocked in at seventh and eighth.
Lambert tallied another win for the Jeffs in the 1,000-meter run while Ellen Richmond ’12 nabbed second in the 600. Kaliski and Hopper placed second and third in the 3,000. Dao, Walker, Eliza Schalch ’12 and Itai Brand-Thomas ’15 took second in the distance medley relay.

Men

At the Tufts Invitational, the Jeffs placed fourth in a field of 10 teams. Ben Scheetz ’12 won the 600-meter run and the mile. Andrew Erskine ’13 followed for fourth in the mile. First-year KC Fussell led the field in the 5,000-meter run with classmate Greg Turissini taking second and Dillon Buckley ’12 placing fourth.

Matt Melton ’14 came in first in the 800, while Pat Grimes ’13 and Erskine placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000. The Jeffs had five runners finish in the top 16 in a field of 35 in the 200-meter dash. Mark Cort ’15 led the Jeffs with a sixth-place finish. Cort also placed fourth in the long jump.

At Wesleyan this Saturday, Scheetz won the 400 and 1,000. Grimes, Melton and Eli How ’13 took third, sixth and tenth in the 1,000. Romey Sklar ’15 placed fifth in the 800, and Erskine and Lucas Lebovitz ’15 took fourth and eighth, respectively, in the mile. Turissini finished fifth in the 3,000 with Buckley and Fussell coming in ninth and 10th. Cort placed eighth in the long jump and triple jump. Grimes, Melton, Sklar and Erskine won the distance medley relay.
