First-year Devyn Gardner shot a 74 at the Williams Fall Invitational.

Women
Led by senior captain Liz Monty, the Lady Jeffs golf team ended their fall play with two successful tournaments, taking fifth at the Williams Fall Invitational over fall break before tying for third at the Wellesley Invitational.

Held over a rainy weekend at the Taconic Golf Club, the Williams Fall Invitational proved a difficult weekend for the 14 schools involved. Over the first day, only two players shot a score below 80.

While Sunday’s improvement in the weather saw nine players log scores in the 70s, the course still gave the Lady Jeffs the most trouble of any they played this fall.

Monty shot a two-day total of 164 to put her tied for eighth individually. On Saturday, her 84 led Amherst, though she managed to shave four strokes off that on Sunday to finish with an 80. Perhaps most impressively, first-year Devyn Gardner shot a three-over 74 (the fourth-highest round of the tournament) on Sunday.

Tallying a total score of 676, the Lady Jeffs tied for fifth overall. Williams, led by Georgiana Salant’s impressive performance (73, 71) won the tournament with a total score of 622.

The following weekend, the Lady Jeffs traveled east to Wellesley, closing their season off at the Wellesley Invitational.

Again led by Monty, the Jeffs improved on their overall score, finishing with a total score of 672 to put them tied for third place in the seven school tournament.

After shooting a 79 on Saturday, Monty improved to shoot a three-over 75 to put her in third place behind Williams’ Salant and Mount Holyoke’s Madi Mendiola.

Sooji Choi ’14 proved crucial to the Lady Jeffs’ success, firing a two-day 161 (82, 79), good enough for 10th-place overall.

Gardner and sophomore Katherine Britt also enjoyed successful weekends, finishing 17th and 20th, respectively, with scores of 177 (89, 88) and 180 (93, 87).

Rounding out the Jeffs golfers were co-captain Irene Hickey ’13 and sophomore C.J. Bernstein, shooting a 189 (98, 91) and a 190 (98, 94), respectively.

Although the Lady Jeffs did not capture any team hardware this fall, there is much to feel good about as they enter their off-season. Monty has asserted herself as one of the premier golfers in the region, while first-year Gardner has carded impressive rounds as well.

Entering the spring, the Lady Jeffs will certainly be gunning for Williams, who won all five tournaments they entered this fall, but behind the consistent play of Monty, the rival may get interesting.

Men
The men’s golf team, who took fifth at their NESCAC tournament qualifier, will, for the second straight year, just miss making the tournament.
