Women

The women of Amherst swim and dive started their Thanksgiving break off with a win at home, defeating the mules of Colby 148-100. With an astounding individual performance, Emily Hyde ’16 won 100-yard freestyle, the 200 freestyle, and the 200 individual medley. Fellow junior Hannah Hummel snagged two more victories for the Jeffs in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke.

Mimicking Hummel’s performance in breaststroke, Stephanie Moriarty ’18 took the gold in both 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Sarah Conklin ’16 won the 200-yard butterfly and Sabrina Lee ’15 won the 50-yard freestyle and took second in the 200 backstroke.

The purple and white had only one day’s rest before traveling to Wesleyan on Monday, Nov. 24 for the team’s first away meet of the year.

The women came away from the day with a 148-116 win over the cardinals. Conklin set two Wesleyan with her victories in the 50- and 100-yard butterflies.

Conklin also contributed to the winning 200 medley relay team consisting of herself, Moriarty, Lee, and Victoria Chao ’18.

The team will travel to take on Middlebury this Saturday, Dec. 6.

Men

The men fared just as well against Colby , winning their meet 168-111. First-year Sam Spurrell was a spark for the Jeffs, claiming three first-place finishes. His individual win took place in the form of a 200-yard butterfly that left the competition in his wake. Spurrell also swam beside Matt Heise ’16, Elijah Spiro ’18, and Connor Sholtis ’15 to win the 200 medley and swam the last leg to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with Vic Sun ’16, Tyler Hampton ’15, and Jeff Anderson ’16.

Amherst’s only diver, Asher Lichtig ’16 won his 1-meter dive.

The men of Amherst swim and dive ensured that the teams would go home undefeated by beating Wesleyan 179-109. The winning 200 medley team of Sholtis, Spiro, Rochford, and Hampton proved to be a powerful group. Sholtis and Spiro each picked up two individual wins. Sholtis took first in both the 100 and 200 freestyles. Not content with two wins, Spiro claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke and set a pool record for in the 50, coming into the wall at 27.14 seconds. Hampton rounded out the relay team’s performance with a win in the 50 freestyle.
