The Amherst women’s track and field team competed and impressed in the Tufts Invitational last Saturday.
First-year Julia Asin finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.42, while Sarah Whelan ’17 and Katherie Hom ’19 finished back-to-back to take both 10th and 11th place. Whelan completed the race with a time of 28.50, and Hom 28.64.
Asin also competed in the 400-meter dash, claiming second place overall with a time of 59.54. Danielle Griffin ’18 finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:02:73.
Amherst impressed in the 600-meter run finishing back-to-back, with Victoria Hensley ’16 earning second and Leonie Rauls ’18 third. Hensley finished with a time of 1:39.68 and Rauls with a time of 1.39.95.
Senior Keelin Moehl was Amherst’s top finisher coming in second place in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2.20.86.
The purple and white also took ninth, 10th and 11th in the event with first-year Lela Walter coming in at 2:25.92, followed by Kaeli Mathias ’18 (2:25.92) and Adele Loomis ’18 (2:26.94).
In the long-distance events, first-year Christina Scartelli earned eighth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:14.15, and running in the 5,000-meter run, senior Betsy Black placed 11th with a time of 18:32.18.
The 4x200-meter relay team which consisted of Hensley, Hom, Asin and Abbey Asare-Bediako ’18 placed second with a time of 1:50.64. The quartet of Rauls, Walter, Moehl and first-year Isabel Balcezak finished right behind in third with a time of 4:13.58.
The purple and white also competed well in the field events at the invitational. Louise Atadja ’16 placed 15th in the long jump with a distance of 4.54 meters, while first-year Emily Flaherty took 20th with a jump of 4.43 meters.
Asare-Bediako claimed third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.88 meters and Flaherty finished 10th with a jump of 10.02 meters.
Next up, the purple and white will travel to Boston University to compete in the Valentine Classic on Friday, Feb. 12.
