For the first time in nearly a month, the Amherst softball team suffered defeat, going 1-2 in their series against archrival Williams this past weekend, April 22-23, after defeating Keene State earlier in the week. With these results, the Mammoths secured a spot in the NESCAC playoffs and their record now stands at 24-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
On Wednesday, April 19, the Mammoths defeated Keene State 9-8. The Owls took an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. Amherst responded in the bottom of the frame by scoring a run, cutting the lead to 5-1.
This past week, the Amherst softball team continued its perfect month of April, posting a 5-0 record with sweeps of both Smith and Wesleyan.
Last Wednesday, the Mammoths faced off against local rival Smith in a doubleheader. Game One proved to be the closest game that Amherst played in almost a month, with the Mammoths prevailing by the slightest of margins, 2-1. With neither team able to muster a run in the first five innings, the contest quickly turned into a pitchers’ duel between Smith’s Natalie Burchat and Amherst’s duo of Jackie Buechler ’17 and Lorena Ukanwa ’19.
This weekend, the Amherst women’s softball team claimed its first conference and divisional wins of the 2017 season. The purple and white swept Hamilton in a three-game series that took place over the course of two days.
Over spring break, the Amherst women’s softball team traveled to Winter Garden, Florida to start off its 2017 season. Taking advantage of the warmer weather, the team played twelve games.
Amherst men’s swimming and diving wrapped up its 2016-17 season by competing in the NCAA Division III Championships. Team members who qualified traveled to the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas to compete in the prestigious four-day meet, which took place March 15-18. Emory University won the team crown with 438 points, while Kenyon took second with 384 points, followed by Denison with 371 points. Amherst ended the meet with 35.5 points and a 20th place team finish out of the 52-team field.
The Amherst men’s swimming and diving team returned to action this weekend, Feb 17-19, at the NESCAC championship tournament. Hosted by Wesleyan University, all eleven NESCAC schools faced off at this three-day meet.
Finishing the meet with 1,402 points, Amherst took second place out of the eleven teams, edged out by Williams, who ended with 1,671 points. Tufts (1,391), Connecticut College (1,331) and Bates (997.5) rounded out the top five teams.
The Amherst men’s swimming and diving team finished their regular season with two meets last week. On Saturday, the No. 12 purple and white fell to No. 4 ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a score of 197-102.
