While the rest of campus was on break, the Amherst men’s swimming and diving team was busy training and competing. Over interterm, the team competed in three meets and traveled to Puerto Rico for a week-long training trip.
Amherst’s fourth dual meet of the 2016-2017 season took place on Dec. 31, against Union College. Amherst defeated Union, 157-83, continuing the team’s undefeated start to the season. The team was propelled to victory by claiming nine first place finishes and the top-three finishes in three events.
This past weekend, the Amherst men’s swimming and diving team picked up another dual meet win, continuing its strong 2016-2017 campaign. Amherst traveled to NESCAC rival Middlebury and picked up a 179.5-113.5 win, making it three victories in a row for Amherst.
The talented team composed of a mix of veterans and fresh faces has impressed so far this season, dominating the NESCAC competition they have faced handily. In addition to dominating the overall affair, the purple and white took first place in 11 events.
The Amherst men’s swimming and diving team kicked off its season with two conference victories, defeating Colby 151-115 on Nov. 19 at home and vanquishing Wesleyan on Nov. 21 by a commanding 168-108 margin. Coming off a 6-2 dual-meet record last year, a fourth place finish at the NESCAC championships and a top-30 finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, the team starts the season ranked number 13 in the nation and is poised to have a very successful season with a combination of new and returning talent.
As first-years, Luke Haggerty and Amanda Temares were eager to get involved on the Amherst campus. They searched the college website for activities and both were excited when they found the sailing team. But when they arrived, they were disappointed to find out that the team no longer existed on the Amherst campus. Still intrigued, Luke found out that the Unviversity of Masscahusetts has a sailing team and in the fall of sophomore year, he decided to join.
