The Amherst men’s squash team hosted one of the most competitive conference championship tournament in the country this weekend Feb. 3-5. With six out of the 11 total teams ranked in the top 25, No. 24 purple and white had their work cut out for them.
The Amherst women’s squash team opened postseason play this past weekend, taking on a trio of opponents at the NESCAC Championships. Playing host to the tournament, the purple and white bounced back from an early defeat to go 2-1 and claim fifth place out of the ten participating schools.
The Amherst women’s basketball team had an exciting weekend of NESCAC play. The team first traveled to Bates on Friday, Feb. 3.
Against the Bobcats, senior Ali Doswell became the program’s overall leading scorer as well as the purple and white’s career leader in made three-pointers.
The purple and white jumped out to an early lead in an impressive first quarter, tallying 33 points in just ten minutes of play. Leading the way for Amherst in this offensive explosion was senior Medith Doswell, who notched 14 points and four assists in the frame.
Amherst men’s basketball has reestablished themselves as one of the best teams in the nation after a successful weekend, in LeFrak gymnasium. With two conference wins against Bates and Tufts this weekend followed by a tough loss to Wesleyan, the purple and white improve to a NESCAC record of 6-3 and an overall record of 16-5. Saturday’s win against Tufts also marks Amherst’s 32nd straight win at home.
In the team’s first competitive action of the season, Amherst men’s tennis demonstrated their immense potential this past weekend at the ITA Regional Championships. The purple and white had four participants in singles action, all four of who made the round of 32, and three doubles teams, two of which made it all the way to the Elite Eight.
The Amherst women’s soccer team went 2-0 this weekend, taking down NESCAC rivals Tufts and Bates. These league victories were crucial in boosting the purple and white’s place in the NESCAC standings, propelling them to second place, just behind rival Williams.
Amherst opened the Tufts game with a strong start. In just the ninth minute, Maeve McNamara ’19 placed the ball just over the Jumbos’ goalkeeper’s head to give Amherst a 1-0 lead — a huge edge in the pivotal away-game tilt.
This Saturday, the Amherst women’s cross country team traveled to Lehigh University to compete against the largest pool of competition they’ve faced yet. The purple and white managed to beat out 30 other teams to place an impressive 12th at the Paul Short Invitational, which featured east coast schools from all divisions.
Amherst returned to the Paul Short Invitational for the first time since the 2014 season, where they cruised to a stellar fourth place out of 40 teams.
