The Jeffs had an enormously successful weekend at Boston Univ.’s Valentine Invitational, with 26 of 29 entries resulting in personal records. They faced stiff competition, as they raced against a number of Div. I teams.
Placing 11th overall, senior Ben Scheetz was the top Div. III finisher in the mile. He bested his own personal record by 11 seconds and was just .6 seconds off the school record, running 4:03.95. Pat Grimes ’13 was the next Jeff to finish the mile, placing 44th in the field of 244 with a time of 4:12.57. Andrew Erskine ’13 finished 19th of 73 in the 5k.
With a personal best 7.27-second 60-meter dash, junior Selasie Krampa qualified for next weekend’s New England Div. III Championship, held at Springfield. Krampa placed 35th in a field of 83.
Junior Denzel Duncan stood out for the Jeffs in the field events. His weight throw of 14.06 meters was a new PR by a meter and a half, placing 15th of 36.
Sophomore Matt Melton finished 29th out of 208 runners in the 800-meter run. His 1:53.33 finish was a four second PR.
The women’s team had 10 season-best performances at the Valentine Invitational, as well as 11 personal records.
In the field events, sophomore Naomi Bates placed sixth of 48 in the long jump with a jump of 5.33 meters. Junior Jessica Mueller led the Jeffs in the triple jump with a jump of 10.38 meters, while senior Jordan Roehl had a weight throw of 13.02 meters.
Juniors Keri Lambert and Lauren Almeida led the Jeff pack in the 800-meter run, placing 34th (2:16.92) and 68th (2:20.99), respectively, in a field of 151. Lambert had the third-fastest Div. III time in New England. Senior Ellen Richmond came in at 2:22.35, dropping 10 seconds from her previous best time.
Sophomore Lisa Walker edged out classmate Amy Dao by .04 seconds in the mile. Walker’s time of 5:14.44 bested her personal record by 15 seconds. Junior Kristen Moulton led the Jeffs in the 3k with a time of 10:41.61. Abby Hopper ’13 dropped 54 seconds from her best time this year in the event, finishing with a 10:46.78.
Abraelle Shirley ’15 and Shyloe Jones ’14 led the Jeffs in the 200-meter dash with times of 26.71 and 26.84, respectively. They placed 73rd and 80th, respectively, out of 164 sprinters.
The distance medley relay team of Almeida, Bates, Lambert and Melissa Sullivan ’12 placed 7th of 29, marking the fourth-best time of a Div. III team this season.
The Jeffs return to the track at next weekend’s Div. III New England Championships, hosted by Smith College.
