The 11th-ranked women’s lacrosse team dominated Tufts on last Saturday’s Senior Day, besting the Jumbos 12-4.
The Jeffs were 5-for-6 in the first half, holding a 5-0 lead at the break. Krista Zsitvay ’14 started things off with a free-position goal at the 28:14 mark.
Marta Randall ’13 followed up with another free-position conversion just over a minute later. Zsitvay scored again at the 17:06 off an assist from junior Hillary Densen.
The women’s lacrosse team beat Wesleyan last Wednesday before falling to Middlebury on Saturday. Their overall record is 7-3 (4-3 NESCAC) after a dominant win against Conn. College last night.
Hamilton snapped the women’s lacrosse team’s five-game winning streak on Saturday. The Jeffs bested Bowdoin before spring break, defeated Buffalo State and William Smith during a spring break trip to Florida, and took down Springfield before falling to the Continentals.
The 16th-ranked Jeffs upset No. 5 Bowdoin with an 8-5 victory on Saturday, March 17.
Marta Randall ’13 notched the first goal of the game within the first five minutes, scoring on a free-position attempt. Bowdoin responded two minutes later to tie the score at one.
MEN
Ben Scheetz ’12, Pat Grimes ’13 and Matt Melton ’14 represented Amherst at the NCAA Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Grinnell, Iowa.
Grimes was the only runner to qualify for the finals, placing in the top 10 in the mile in Friday’s preliminary heat. His time of 4:14.85 put him in ninth place. He did not finish the race in the final heat.
The women’s lacrosse team opened their season with a hard-fought loss to Colby but followed it up with an overtime victory over Bates.
The team posted a 9-6 record last season and enter this year ranked 16th by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. They return eight of 11 starters and five of last season’s top six scorers. The Jeffs welcome nine first-years this season, which should add depth to the squad.
Men
Amherst placed 20th out of 34 teams at the Open New England Championships on Friday and Saturday, where they competed against the top New England runners across all divisions. Senior Ben Scheetz set the Div. III record in the 800-meter run. His time of 1:47.43 earned him second place, behind a Div. II runner who kicked it into gear for the final stretch.
The men’s swim team placed second to Williams in last weekend’s NESCAC championship meet for the second consecutive year. They scored 1,959 points, the highest in program history and 344.5 more points than they did last year. The first-place Ephs scored 2,011 points, winning by the smallest margin in championship history.
The Jeffs won two of nine events on the first day of the meet. Ben McBratney ’12 won the 50-yard breaststroke with a 25.84. He broke the NESCAC, meet, pool and school records with his preliminary-heat time of 25.56.
