Indoor Track Struggles at Nationals

MEN

Ben Scheetz ’12, Pat Grimes ’13 and Matt Melton ’14 represented Amherst at the NCAA Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Grinnell, Iowa.

Grimes was the only runner to qualify for the finals, placing in the top 10 in the mile in Friday’s preliminary heat. His time of 4:14.85 put him in ninth place. He did not finish the race in the final heat.

Scheetz finished in 12th place in the preliminary heat of the mile with a time of 4:18.45. Scheetz also placed 12th in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run. He was the national champion in the 800 last year, but his time of 1:56.41 didn’t make the cut for finals.

Melton also missed out on a spot in the final heat, finishing ninth with a 1:54.79. Melton was one of 10 runners in the event to finish under the former stadium record.

WOMEN

The distance medley relay team of Lauren Almeida ’13, Naomi Bates ’14, Mellissa Sullivan ’12 and Keri Lambert ’13 competed for the women at the Div. III National Championships. They placed ninth with a time of 11:59.44. All 10 relay teams in the event broke the previous stadium record of 12:28.18, but Middlebury set the new mark, finishing in first place with a time of 11:37.35.
