Entering the season ranked 21st in the nation, the men’s squash team earned a 7-2 win over the 33rd-ranked Northeastern Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 22 to open up their 2014 campaign.

In his debut in the top spot of the lineup, captain Alex Southmayd ’15 earned a 3-0 sweep over TJ Dyer in a match that included an exciting 12-10 third game.

Fellow co-captain Scott DeSantis commanded his match in the No. 2 spot, defeating his opponent 11-2, 11-6, 11-3. In the No. 3 spot first-year Cameorn Bhadori cruised in his collegiate debut with a 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 win.

Despite winning the first game of the match, 11-5, Max Kardon ’15 wasn’t able to figure out Northeastern’s Evan Jacobson in the fourth slot, losing a competitive match that featured two 11-9 games.

Sophomore Darian Ehsani topped his opponent in the No. 5 spot, while Stephen Cacouris ’16 earned another W in the No. 6 slot to add two more to the win column. James Line ’16 defeated his opponent in three games as well in the No. 7 spot, while Peter Woolverton was able to beat his opponent in four games in the No. 8 spot.

Peter Mack ’15 rounded out the day for the Jeffs in the No. 9 spot, where he lost to his opponent 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9.
On the match, DeSantis said, “We are encouraged by the win and look forward to carrying the momentum into January and February.”

“Our goal is to stay fit through the next few weeks and the holidays so that we can keep our undefeated season (1-0) alive,” he added.

Amherst will return to action this weekend to compete at the three-day Div. III individuals beginning on Friday, Dec. 5 at Wesleyan.

Women

Ranked 18th in the country, the women’s squash team swept No. 40 Northeastern, 9-0, on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Captain Arielle Lehman ’15 led her team in the No. 1 position, topping Nicole Powers 11-8, 11-4, 11-4. First-year Kimberly Krayacich notched an easy victory in the No. 2 slot, only dropping a total of three games, while Tiana Palmer-Poroner ’17 won her match in the No. 3 spot 11-5, 11-3, 11-7.

In the fourth spot, Haley McAtee ’18 managed to not drop a single point in her impressive 11-0, 11-0, 11-0 victory. Taryn Clary ’16, Mae Cromwell ’18 and Izzy Derber ’17 each contributed additional 3-0 victories in the fifth through seventh positions.

Junior Nicole Yang won her match in the No. 8 spot by a score of 11-0, 11-6, 11-4, and sophomore Caitlin Merrell closed the day with an 11-8, 11-4, 11-1 win in the No. 9 spot.

Amherst will pick up play again this weekend at the Div. III Individuals.
