Men’s squash participated in its final team competition of the year on Friday at Yale. The team entered the Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) team championships, primarily hosted at Yale, sporting a 6-8-season record and the No. 22 spot in the CSA’s national rankings. That ranking placed Amherst in the Summers Cup (C Division) of the CSA Championships: an eight-team bracket featuring the squads ranked between No. 17 and No. 24 nationally.
This past weekend, men’s squash traveled south to Trinity to compete in the NESCAC championships, which stretched from Friday, Feb. 5 to Sunday, Feb. 7. The team was coming off of a disappointing 0-2 showing at the Little III championship on Jan. 31, where the purple and white fell 8-1 to Williams and 5-4 to Wesleyan in a heartbreaker which nonetheless included several bright spots for Amherst. Senior captain Noah Browne continued his dominant play on the first court, where he started down two sets but fought back for a 3-2 victory to the tune of 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-1.
The Amherst men’s squash team had a busy interterm schedule, first playing two league matches and then hosting the Pioneer Valley Invitational.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, men’s squash traveled east to face 27th-ranked MIT. With an impressive 6-3 victory over Western Ontario two weeks in the rear view, the purple and white made their trip along the Masspike with their eyes on a 2-0 start to a promising young season.
Now ranked 22nd nationally, Amherst put their depth on display in downing the Engineers 7-2, with wins from the 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 positions.
Men’s squash, ranked 23rd nationally entering the season, kicked off a promising 2015-16 campaign on Friday, Nov. 20 when they hosted no. 19 Western Ontario. This matchup presented an opportunity for a minor upset and a statement to Amherst’s foes in the NESCAC and beyond that they were poised to make some noise this year.
