The Amherst women’s soccer team ended a busy weekend with a 1-1-0 record, pushing its overall record to 3-2-0. On Saturday, the team trekked north to Vermont to take on NESCAC rival Middlebury, but were outscored 1-0 by the Panthers. On Sunday, however, they defeated Wentworth at home with a late goal from first-year Laura Greer.
The Amherst women’s soccer team launched its 2016 campaign with two important wins, followed by a tough loss. At the home opener, the women defeated Mount Holyoke 2-0, and this past Saturday they upset NESCAC rival Bowdoin in overtime 2-1.
Last Tuesday, the purple and white overwhelmed the Lyons, outshooting them 22-3. After near misses from Hannah Guzzi ’18, Emily Hester ’17, Rubii Tamen ’19 and first-year Erin McClave, Ashlyn Heller ’17 was able to squeeze two past the goalie and into the net.
It was tied 1-1 when double overtime ended, and while regular season games can end in a tie, this one could not. It was the second round of NCAA’s, and there had to be a winner. The game would be decided by penalty kicks, one of the tensest situations in soccer. And in the painfully close shoot-out, the Amherst women’s soccer team lost, ending their 2015 season.
The Amherst baseball team played a total of five games this past week, winning three and losing two. They split non-league play 1-1 and took the series against fellow NESCAC team Middlebury, 2-1. All games were away last week as Amherst continued to impress on the road.
The Amherst baseball team began a full week of games with success, beating Worcester State University, 3-0, on Wednesday. Come Thursday, they defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1. However, over the weekend, the purple and white suffered losses to Salve Regina (6-11) and Castelton (6-11).
Last week, the baseball team was scheduled to take on MIT and rival Williams. Due to weather complications, Wednesday’s game against MIT was cancelled. However, by Friday, the snow had melted and the men were ready to revive the oldest baseball rivalry in the history of the sport: Amherst versus Williams.
The purple and white started off strong when Max Steinhorn ’18 and Ariel Kenney ’18 crossed home plate to earn an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, Yanni Thanopolous ’17 sent a homer over the right center field fence, knocking in three runs and increasing the lead to 5-0.
The Amherst baseball team faced a busy schedule last week, coming away with three wins and one loss. They started with a comeback win over Springfield College on Wednesday, March 30, 10-7.
Outfielder Anthony Spina ’17 was named NESCAC player of the week after going 7-for-14 from the plate along with .611 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage. Spina also scored six runs to go along with three RBIs and three stolen bases for the week.
