Andrea Quiles-Sanchez ’18 is a sexuality, women’s and gender studies and psychology double major. Quiles-Sanchez’s thesis explores causes for depression within the Latino community. Her advisor is Assistant Professor of Sexuality, Women’s and Gender Studies Sahar Sadjadi.
After years of advocacy from students and faculty, the Latinx and Latin American Studies (LLAS) major has debuted this semester. The major was approved after a unanimous vote from the faculty in the spring of 2017.
Despite its recent creation, the major has seen growth beyond expectations, said professor Rick Lopez, chair of the program.
“We didn’t know that we would have this many courses,” Lopez said. Over 10 courses related to the major were offered this fall.
Krista Goebel ’18 is a psychology and English double major. Her thesis focuses on 8- to 10-year-old children and how they behave in response to the help they receive under different circumstances. Her advisor is Assistant Professor of Psychology Carolyn Palmquist.
Award-winning professor and author Kwame Anthony Appiah gave a talk titled “How to Not Think About Race, Culture and Class” on Thursday, Nov. 2, in Stirn Auditorium, during which he discussed the origins of perceptions of race, culture and class and offered an alternative lens.
Award-winning photojournalist and activist Boniface Mwangi gave a talk titled “How I Found My Voice” on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in Stirn Auditorium about his experience photographing the 2007 Kenyan election, being an activist and running for a seat in Kenyan Parliament this past year. The event, which was free and open to the public, was sponsored by the Lamont Fund, the dean of the faculty and the college’s political science department.
Professor Eleonora Mattiacci is an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Hailing from Italy, Mattiacci holds both a Laurea Triennale and a Laurea Magistrale from Universita’ degli Studi di Bologna and an M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
The Amherst College Police Department (ACPD) sent an email to the community releasing the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistic Act Report, an annual statement of crime statistics over the past three years on Sept. 18.
