The Amherst men’s ice hockey team encountered two NESCAC rivals on the road this weekend. Williams and Middlebury proved to be tough competition for the purple and white, who went 0-2 with only a single goal between the two games.
Up against Williams, the top-ranked team in the NESCAC, Amherst faced a tough challenge on Friday. While the 0-2 result was not ideal, the purple and white made the talented Ephs work for the win, nearly matching them in shots with a 35-32 tally and keeping the game close throughout. In addition, each team went 0/3 on power plays.
The 5-6-3 in conference men’s hockey team was faced with two battles against NESCAC rivals Bowdoin and Colby this weekend. Both games were tight, with each game decided late while the losing side had its goalie pulled. Bowdoin managed to earn the win Friday night, but Amherst conquered Colby the next afternoon.
The men’s ice hockey team finished interterm with a 2-4-1 record for the month-long break. Highlights include an overtime win against NESCAC rival Connecticut College, which was clinched by a Thomas Lindstrom ’18 goal, assisted by fellow sophomores Patrick Mooney and David White.
Hosting Assumption College on Tuesday, Jan. 26, Amherst rode strong performances from their defensemen to a 4-2 win over the Greyhounds. It was a back-and-forth game through the first two periods, although the visitors held the 2-1 advantage entering the final twenty minutes.
The men’s hockey team’s Saturday night contest against Wesleyan, which finished tied at 2-2, began as a battle. The teams played through the first period and most of the second before Amherst’s Kevin Ryder scored on a shot from the point, aided by the net-front screening efforts of his teammates.
The men’s hockey team started the season off with a strong 2-1-1 week, which included their first NESCAC victory, a come-from-behind win, a hard-fought out-of-conference loss, and a back-and-forth tie. The season opener was a tight game against Hamilton and ended in a 3-1 victory.
The first period went scoreless, but only 1:44 had passed in the second when sophomore Thomas Lindstrom sent a pass from center ice to linemate David White ’18, who netted Amherst’s shorthanded goal.
