Occupy Wall Street, which has governed much national attention over the past two months, has spawned hundreds of smaller solidarity movements in colleges and universities nationwide. One such solidarity movement — fittingly called “Occupy Amherst College” — has emerged here.
This week’s column is the second of two that discuss a Christian environmental ethic.
Two weeks ago, I discussed two major descriptors of a Christian environmental ethic: Christianity provides a moral standard by which to explain environmental priorities, and therefore, by which to act; and additionally, the Bible presents proof that God cares about the planet.
Amherst alumna, Bessie Young ’11, was recently named a Mitchell Scholar by the US-Ireland Alliance. Chosen from a pool of 300 applicants, Young is one of 12 Mitchell Scholars from the United States and the first in Amherst history.
For a while, George Papandreou and Antonis Samaras indirectly put Amherst at the center of the Euro crisis. Now Greece, the markets and the Eurozone have moved on to a far more troubling situation with Italy, touching French, and recently even German bond sales as well.

While many students were leaving campus for Thanksgiving break on the weekend of Nov. 18, the men’s basketball team opened its season by hosting the Ken Wright ’52 Memorial Invitational Tournament in LeFrak Gymnasium. The Jeffs came out in full force to dominate both games and defend their title.

Women’s ice hockey holds a 3-1 record (2-0 NESCAC) after the first four games of their season. “I think we all feel good about how we played this past weekend,” tri-captain Geneva Lloyd ’13 said. “More importantly, we feel good about how much we’ve improved just in the last two weeks.”
The men’s hockey team has skated out to a strong start this season, compiling a 3-1-0 record over its first four games.
The Jeffs began this year’s winter campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hamilton two weekends ago, then sustained that momentum by thrashing Westfield State 8-1 the following Tuesday. This past weekend, Amherst competed in the Cape Cod Lighthouse Invitational (hosted by Babson). The Jeffs defeated Salem State 5-1 before suffering their first loss of the year to Hobart, falling 3-1 in the tournament finals.
