For the third consecutive year, the Association of Amherst Students (AAS) has shored up budgets for programs that were previously stewarded by the administration. Following the 15 percent budget cuts imposed by the administration in the midst of the financial crisis in 2008, the AAS established a fund to help defray some departments’ budgetary shortfalls. The Take Your Professor Out (TYPO) and Faculty Tea programs were among a bevy of programs that requested AAS aid when the fund was established, in addition to the Health Education branch of the Health Services Center.
The football team opened its season with a gritty road performance at Bates, bringing home a win to right the ship after losing the last game of the 2010 season to Williams.
While Amherst has a recent history of dominating the Bobcats, this game was competitive from the outset.
The men’s soccer team gave Hamilton a rude welcoming to the NESCAC, defeating the Continentals 1-0 in the inaugural conference meeting between the two programs. Junior Spencer Noon’s 17th-minute goal provided all the offense the team would need.
Noon has been in top form of late. The forward has recorded goals in each of the last three games. This particular finish was a direct result of all the practice time the team has put in on the pitch.
After romping past opponents in its first three matches, the women’s soccer team eked out two nail-biting victories last week to improve to 5-0-0 (3-0-0 NESCAC). The Jeffs upset No. 15 Springfield 1-0 last Wednesday before escaping with a 2-1 overtime win over Hamilton on Saturday. The two wins propelled the Jeffs to No. 18 in the national rankings.
Say what you will about the volleyball team, but it certainly know how to make things dramatic.
The Firedogs saved their best for last this weekend, storming back from a 2-0 deficit to stun Coast Guard, in five sets (13-25, 16-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8) and finish the 2011 Amherst Classic on a high note. A day earlier, the ladies jumped ahead early en route to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-22) shutout of Brandeis.
Playing in just their second home game of the season against Brandeis, Amherst treated the crowd to a relatively comfortable victory.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced on Friday that the start of training camps would be postponed indefinitely and cancelled 43 preseason games scheduled for October due to the on-going struggles to reach a labor agreement between the Players’ Association and the owners.
On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the College community gathered at 18 Stanley Street to celebrate the completion of the fourth and final Habitat for Humanity home on the three acres of land donated to Habitat for Humanity by the College in 2005. '
