If I’m being honest, I’m not the world’s biggest baseball fan. I would put myself under the category of people who like the fun family atmosphere of the MLB games more than the actual sport itself. That being said, I would put myself a little higher up than the people who go to the games for the food.
For the first time since 2008, the Amherst football team has lost back-to-back games. On Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field, Tufts pulled away in the second half for a 27-10 victory over the purple and white.
Midway through the first quarter, Tufts drove down to the Amherst 21-yardline and seemed poised to take an early lead. However, linebacker Parker Chapman ’17 improbably punched the ball out of the hands of a Tufts receiver, forcing the ball to bounce into the end zone and out of bounds giving the purple and white a touchback and a brief respite.
The Amherst field hockey team faced two fierce competitors this week, Trinity and Hamilton. The purple and white fell to the Bantams on Wednesday, Oct. 26 on Gooding Field. Later that week on Saturday, Oct. 29 the purple and white were knocked out of postseason play by the Continentals in the NESCAC quarterfinals.
The Amherst women’s cross country team traveled to Waterville, Maine this past weekend, and managed to steal fifth place in the NESCAC championship. This result comes after Amherst managed a commendable fourth place finish at the championships in 2015.
After competing against high-level division I and II teams all fall, the purple and white had seen their fair share of formidable opponents. However, at a tournament as highly competitive and unpredictable as the NESCAC championship, Amherst needed to put forth their very best race of the year just to place.
With two commanding wins over rival Trinity this past week, including a quarterfinal victor in the NESCAC tournament, the Amherst men’s soccer team is headed to next weekend’s NESCAC semifinals.
Having finished the regular season at the top of the league standings with an impressive record of 8-1-1, the purple and white will host both the tournament semifinals and finals on Hitchcock Field.
With the NESCAC title the goal for the weekend, the Amherst men’s cross country team traveled to Waterville, Maine to compete at the NESCAC Championships, hosted by Colby. Though Amherst came up short, placing second to Williams with 100 points to the 83 scored by the Ephs, the team has much to look forward to for the rest of the season.
