Josef Trapani grew up in Connecticut. He went to the Univ. of Connecticut for his undergraduate degree, his master’s degree and his Ph.D., completing his postdoctoral research in Portland, Ore. He has published in The Journal of Neuroscience, Methods in Cell Biology, PLoS Genetics and Development. He is currently studying sensory neurobiology and zebrafish physiology.
Baghdadi Ali Mahmudi of Libya
Serving five years as the Prime Minister of Libya, Mahmudi officially resigned in August as a result of the newly-formed National Transitional Council. Regardless of his 2006 election, many countries — including the United States — recognized Muammar Gaddafi as the official ruler of Libya. Mahmudi unsuccessfully attempted to seek refuge in Tanzania during the high broadcast Libyan civil war, only to be extradited to Libya on Nov. 8.
Occupy Wall Street, which has governed much national attention over the past two months, has spawned hundreds of smaller solidarity movements in colleges and universities nationwide. One such solidarity movement — fittingly called “Occupy Amherst College” — has emerged here.
Amherst alumna, Bessie Young ’11, was recently named a Mitchell Scholar by the US-Ireland Alliance. Chosen from a pool of 300 applicants, Young is one of 12 Mitchell Scholars from the United States and the first in Amherst history.
The Amherst Association of Students (AAS) Senate, which counts among its constitutional purposes a goal to “serve as an advocate for student interest, and present a forum for opinions and issues to be raised,” manages a budget comprised of the Student Activity Fees and a percentage of the tuition paid by each student.
Chemistry Professor Elizabeth Young grew up in eastern Pennsylvania. She went to Haverford College for her undergraduate degree and MIT for her Ph.D.
Williams College closed on Monday as a precaution for the members of their community after the scrawling of a racial slur — “All Niggers Must Die” — in a dormitory hallway. A student reported the incident to Campus Safety and Security (CSS) of Williams around 12:30 AM on Saturday. Not only were the Williamstown Police notified, but CSS also launched a college investigation.
