Hamilton snapped the women’s lacrosse team’s five-game winning streak on Saturday. The Jeffs bested Bowdoin before spring break, defeated Buffalo State and William Smith during a spring break trip to Florida, and took down Springfield before falling to the Continentals.

The 16th-ranked Jeffs upset No. 5 Bowdoin with an 8-5 victory on Saturday, March 17.

Marta Randall ’13 notched the first goal of the game within the first five minutes, scoring on a free-position attempt. Bowdoin responded two minutes later to tie the score at one.

Sophomore Alex Philie scored on another free position attempt at the 17:01 mark, tallying the first of six straight goals for the Jeffs. Two minutes after Philie’s goal, Elizabeth Ludlow ’14 put away a free position shot for a 3-1 score at the half.

Senior tri-captain Allie Horwitz scored twice to open the second half, netting a free-position shot at the 27:37 mark and scoring an unassisted goal at 25:27 with a shot to the top right corner. Just over a minute later, Randall scored her second goal of the game. Philie also scored again to bring the Jeffs lead to 7-1.

The Polar Bears began their own offensive surge with 14:59 to play, scoring off a free-position shot. They cut the deficit to four with eight minutes to play.

Bowdoin nearly scored again four minutes later, but Jeff goalkeeper Lamia Harik ‘12 stopped the shot attempt. The Polar Bears scored twice more and trailed 7-5 with 1:45 to play.

Horwitz secured the Jeffs’ win with 40 seconds left in the game, scoring her third goal off an assist from Annelies O’Dea ’14. The Jeffs held a clear offensive edge with a 24-12 shot advantage and scored on four of six free-position attempts. Horwitz was 3-5 on shots for the game.

The Jeffs traveled to Florida for spring break where they defeated Buffalo State (16-9) and William Smith (12-7).

Sophomores Ludlow, Philie and Krista Zsitvay accounted for 10 of the Jeffs’ 16 goals against Buffalo Sate. Ludlow scored four, while Philie and Zsitvay tallied three each.

Ludlow and Philie scored the first two goals of the game before Buffalo State evened the score at 2-2. Randall, Philie and Ludlow each scored for a 5-2 advantage, and the Jeffs were up 8-5 at the break after three goals in a row from O’Dea, Philie and Megan Mills ’15.

Mills and Zsitvay tallied goals to go up 10-5 at the beginning of the second. Heath Cockrell ’15 and Horwitz each added a goal during the half. Zsitvay scored twice in the last 45 seconds to seal the dominant win. Hillary Densen ’13 tallied three assists.

Randall, Horwitz and Zsitvay each scored three goals against William Smith. After goals from Mills and Ludlow, the Jeffs were down 3-2 with 19:27 to play in the first, but held William Smith scoreless for the remainder of the half. Amherst went on a 7-0 run to close the half at 9-3.

William Smith outscored the Jeffs 4-3 in the second, but it was not enough to recover from the offensive rout of the first half. Caroline Holliday ’14 scored the final goal of the game off an assist from Horwitz. Horwitz and Densen finished with two assists apiece.

The Jeffs continued their winning streak with a 14-10 win over Springfield on Wednesday, March 28. Five minutes in, the Jeffs were down 2-1, with Ludlow tallying Amherst’s first goal. The Amherst offense then picked up speed, scoring nine straight goals. Horwitz, Densen, Holliday and O’Dea each netted a goal, while Ludlow scored two and Wyatt Davis ’13 added three. Springfield added three more goals and Randall tallied one for Amherst before the half to put the Jeffs up 11-5. Mills scored on a free-position shot just over five minutes into the second half.

Davis scored off of an assist from Densen and Philie put away another free-position attempt before the end of the half. Springfield had a late offensive surge, scoring four goals in the final 1:18, but it was not enough to dent the Jeffs’ significant lead.

The Jeffs’ winning streak ended at Hamilton on Saturday with an 8-6 loss. Randall netted the first goal at the 24:03 mark and tallied a second after a Continental equalizer. Hamilton proceeded to score four unanswered goals.

The Jeffs broke the Continentals momentum before the break, as Mills scored on a free-position attempt with 4:06 to play to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Hamilton scored two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second, pulling away from the Jeffs 7-3. Randall responded with a free-position goal, but Hamilton scored again with 3:56 to play. Randall scored her fourth goal of the game at 2:28, and Horwitz added another mark with 41 seconds left, but the late pressure wasn’t enough to overcome the Continentals.

The Jeffs matched Hamilton 3-3 in the second frame, but could not recover from the Continental’s 4-0 run in the first half. Amherst is currently ranked ninth, with a 5-2 record (2-2 NESCAC). They return to the field on Wednesday to play Wesleyan at home.
