The Firedogs entered the weekend with energy and enthusiasm that carried over to their play in a slate of home matches, including their home opener against NESCAC rival Bowdoin.

“Bowdoin is a big rival for us and we were all really fired up to compete against them,” Nicole Carter ’16 said of the match.
Amherst got off to a fast start against the Polar Bears and held the lead during much of the first set, but they couldn’t hold on to get the win in what turned out to be a pivotal set, losing 28-26.

Coming off a successful campaign last season, the men’s rugby team looked to set the tone for the 2013 season Sunday against Salem State. The Jeffs came out with a lot of energy and dominated the Vikings 36-12 behind a talented returning group of players and rookies that proved that they were ready to step into spotlight.

Micah Rotich ’14 scored the first try of the game for Amherst on an up and over kick to himself, and the Jeffs didn’t look back. Amherst was able to dominate in time of possession and eventually wore Salem State down.

After 121 years on the old Pratt Field, the Amherst football team enters its 122nd season with a remodeled home venue and championship aspirations. Thirteen starters return along with a number of other key contributors to anchor a squad that went 6-2 last season.

The stage was set. Guy Mastis ‘09 was set to wrestle for a national championship in Amherst’s first season as a club-wrestling program in the 2008-2009 season. His opponent didn’t even know where Amherst is, nor did most of the field at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championship Tournament (NCWA). That all changed after Mastis won a national championship and earned all-American honors in the 235 pound weight class.

As a male student-athlete and football player, I was deeply concerned and, quite frankly, offended by “The Elephant in the Room.” I respect and completely agree that sexual misconduct on the Amherst campus is a serious issue that needs to be addressed thoughtfully and urgently. You will never hear me disagree with that fact on that point. However, what I do object to is that male student-athletes are being unfairly targeted by baseless claims, gross generalizations, and sexist insinuations.
