Women of color from the Amherst College community gathered April 13 in the Lord Jeffery Inn to share, reflect and consider questions of success, career and work-life balance. Sunday’s event was the College’s second annual dialogue centered around women of color in the workplace.
Rachael Abernethy ’16 worked with staff members Christina Ramos of the Career Center, Mariana Cruz of the Multicultural Resource Center, Danielle Hussey of the Women’s and Gender Center and Class of 2015 Dean Charri Boykin-East to plan the event.
Wangené Hall is a senior majoring in Theater and Dance. Her Theater and Dance thesis “Naked in Heels: Confessions of an Aspiring Pop Star” will be performed at 8 p.m. in Holden Theater on April 10, 11 and 12. Her advisors are Professor of Theater and Dance Wendy Woodson and Visiting Professor of Theater and Dance Charlotte L. Brathwaite.

This year, the Diversity and Community Strategic Planning Committee has been working to examine the meaning of diversity at Amherst. Along with the three other main committees involved in this year’s strategic planning process, the Diversity and Community committee has been involved in thinking about the College’s identity and plans for the future.

Q: Tell me about your thesis.
A: My thesis is a senior project in performance and I, in collaboration with my cast, have written a play. I am directing it and I will also star in it. Its title is “A quinceañera” and it follows a girl as she celebrates her quinceañera.

Since October, the Integration of Curricular and Co-Curricular Learning Strategic Planning Committee has been examining the issue of how learning supports living at Amherst, how living supports learning at Amherst and how the two aspects meet in developing co-curricular learning.
Last week, the Department of Mathematics changed its name to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and began offering a new statistics major within the department.
The creation of the statistics major has been six years in the making. The major was created from the collaborative efforts of Professors Amy Wagaman, Shu-Min Liao and Nicholas Horton. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has also hired another lecturer for the spring to round out the statistics faculty.
Ask Big Questions, a new campus-wide initiative started by Provost Peter Uvin, began last Tuesday. This is the newest of Provost Uvin’s projects to foster as stronger sense of community and promote dialogue, exchange and reflection.
“The aim of Ask Big Question is to bring out campus together in a meaningful way,” said Tania Dias, strategic planning assistant to the provost. “By listening and sharing our stories, we form new friendships, we understand each other better and we grow into a stronger, tighter community.”
