Bolstered by the return of core offensive players, the men’s soccer team looks to recapture the NESCAC title this season. Led by dynamic attacking players in as Spencer Noon ’13, Jae Heo ’14 and James Mooney ’13E, the Jeffs enter the season ranked sixth in the nation, well ahead of their NESCAC rivals (the only other ranked team is Wesleyan, at No. 24).
One of the most successful seasons in men’s soccer history ended Nov. 19 in a tough 2-1 loss to the Stevens Institute of Technology in the NCAA Round of 16.
“I had such a great time coaching this team this season,” head caoch Justin Serpone said. “To go on a journey like that with such a special team is something I will cherish and remember for a long time.” Despite the loss, Serpone was proud of what his team achieved: “Winning our second NESCAC Championship and setting a program record for wins is an amazing accomplishment.”
The men’s soccer team had a crazy up-and-down week — and not only because of the weather.
After suffering their first loss of the season — a miserable 3-2 defeat to unheralded Conn. College — the Jeffs rebounded with a convincing 4-0 win over Colby in the NESCAC quarterfinals.
It must have seemed like 2,000 on 11 for the Wesleyan Cardinal soccer team this past Saturday.
Hundreds of rowdy Amherst fans patrolled the sideline, cheering on their beloved Jeffs and jeering their opponents, with Wesleyan goalie Adam Purdy setting the brunt of the howling.
Purdy and the Wesleyan defense, however, were able to keep the Jeffs scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time, earning a 0-0 draw that won the Cardinals the Little Three regular season championship and probably the NESCAC too.
After enduring a grueling two-week span that included four key away NESCAC games, the men’s soccer team remains undefeated. After drawing with rival Williams, the Lord Jeffs proceeded to defeat Trinity, Colby and Bowdoin in succession. The No. 4 Jeffs (11-0-1, 7-0-1 NESCAC) have climbed into a first-place tie with No. 9 Wesleyan, setting up a blockbuster matchup between the two teams on Homecoming weekend.
The men’s soccer team gave Hamilton a rude welcoming to the NESCAC, defeating the Continentals 1-0 in the inaugural conference meeting between the two programs. Junior Spencer Noon’s 17th-minute goal provided all the offense the team would need.
Noon has been in top form of late. The forward has recorded goals in each of the last three games. This particular finish was a direct result of all the practice time the team has put in on the pitch.
After an intense, rigorous and sweat-drenched preseason, the men’s soccer team justified its national No. 19 ranking with a pair of non-league wins over the weekend. On Saturday, the Jeffs handily defeated Colby-Sawyer College 3-0 to open the season on a victorious note. The team then continued its winning ways Sunday with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Bridgewater State University.
