After a disappointing 0-0 draw against Williams over fall break, the men’s soccer team rebounded with three shutout wins over Trinity, Colby and Bowdoin this past fortnight, grabbing sole possession of first place in the NESCAC standings.
The undefeated Jeffs (11-0-1, 7-0-1 NESCAC, ranked No. 2 in the nation) currently lead No. 17 Williams (6-0-2) by two points in the race for the conference’s top seed. Amherst has two conference matches remaining: at third-place Wesleyan (5-1-1) on Saturday and Conn. College (0-2-6) on Wednesday.
I’m not the first Red Sox fan who has all positive things to say about Derek Jeter, nor (I hope) will I be the last. This week, I’m taking the ubiquitous respect for the Yankee captain a step further. Baseball fans will already know why I’m taking up this subject now: The Bronx Bombers lost their shortstop for the remainder of the playoffs with a fractured ankle and now find themselves trailing the Tigers 3-0, a deficit from which only one team in history (that's right!) has come back.

Women
Three weeks ago at the Williams Invitational, senior All-American Keri Lambert lost her lead in the race’s final stretch and was promptly outkicked by Middlebury’s Addie Tousley to lose first place. That loss, it seems, has sparked something dangerous in the Amherst native.
Over fall break the women’s cross country team traveled to Westfield State to race in the 43-team James Earley Invitational.
Field hockey rebounded in a big way from two straight overtime losses, beating archrival Williams 3-2 at home on Oct. 6.
The Lord Jeffs continued their winning ways against Colby with a decisive 6-0 victory on Saturday only to fall in overtime yet again on Sunday, this time to highly-ranked Bowdoin.
Coming into the Williams game riding a three-game losing streak for the first time since 2006, the team started the game the dominant side, winning five penalty corners within the first 10 minutes alone.
Women
Led by senior captain Liz Monty, the Lady Jeffs golf team ended their fall play with two successful tournaments, taking fifth at the Williams Fall Invitational over fall break before tying for third at the Wellesley Invitational.
Held over a rainy weekend at the Taconic Golf Club, the Williams Fall Invitational proved a difficult weekend for the 14 schools involved. Over the first day, only two players shot a score below 80.
The Firedogs have resurrected their season by winning five out of their last six games, including three NESCAC matchup, to move to 11-5 overall.
