The women’s swimming and diving team headed up to Middlebury and took second place with a score of 1,343 this past weekend in the 2016 NESCAC tournament. Coming off last weekend with strong wins against both MIT and Springfield College, the women were ready to compete in the final meet of the regular season.
The Amherst women’s basketball team suffered its first home loss in 121 consecutive games this past Saturday afternoon, when talented NESCAC rival Tufts bested the squad.
The Amherst women’s squash team survived their toughest week yet as their season reaches its latter half. They enter their next competition with a respectable 9-5 record against some of the country’s top squads. On senior day, the purple and white cruised against the Lyons of Mount Holyoke en route to a perfect 9-0 victory. Throughout their dominant performance, no player lost more than one match, and six different women managed to secure pristine 3-0 wins.
On Saturday afternoon, the Amherst men’s track and field team competed in the Tufts Invitational at the Baronian Field House in Medford, Massachusetts. Thomas Matthew ’16 qualified for the final heat and finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.31. David Ingraham ’18 and Stadtler Thompson ’19 finished back-to-back in the 200-meter dash to take eighth and ninth overall with marks of 23.59 and 23.75, respectively. Ingraham also enjoyed success in the 400-meter dash where he placed sixth, coming in at 52.13.
The 5-6-3 in conference men’s hockey team was faced with two battles against NESCAC rivals Bowdoin and Colby this weekend. Both games were tight, with each game decided late while the losing side had its goalie pulled. Bowdoin managed to earn the win Friday night, but Amherst conquered Colby the next afternoon.
This past weekend, men’s squash traveled south to Trinity to compete in the NESCAC championships, which stretched from Friday, Feb. 5 to Sunday, Feb. 7. The team was coming off of a disappointing 0-2 showing at the Little III championship on Jan. 31, where the purple and white fell 8-1 to Williams and 5-4 to Wesleyan in a heartbreaker which nonetheless included several bright spots for Amherst. Senior captain Noah Browne continued his dominant play on the first court, where he started down two sets but fought back for a 3-2 victory to the tune of 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-1.
The Amherst women’s track and field team competed and impressed in the Tufts Invitational last Saturday.
First-year Julia Asin finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.42, while Sarah Whelan ’17 and Katherie Hom ’19 finished back-to-back to take both 10th and 11th place. Whelan completed the race with a time of 28.50, and Hom 28.64.
Asin also competed in the 400-meter dash, claiming second place overall with a time of 59.54. Danielle Griffin ’18 finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:02:73.
