Amherst College men’s soccer impressed in an action-packed weekend. Coming off a tough loss to Middlebury last weekend, the Mammoths tied archrival Williams in a difficult away match and defeated Pine Manor College the next day.
The Mammoths started off the weekend with a 1-1 tie against Williams on Saturday. The Ephs put Amherst under pressure from the first whistle, and their early push led to a goal in the 16th minute. Williams’ Malcolm Singleton got on the end of a deep throw-in from Andrew Mathew and fired a shot into the back of the Mammoth net from just outside the six.
It was a tough weekend for the Amherst men’s soccer team as they suffered their first regular season home loss in six years on Saturday. After falling to Middlebury, the Mammoths are now 1-1 on the season and have dropped to sixth in the NESCAC standings.
Amherst controlled the run of play, outshooting the Panthers 15-8 and earning eight corner kicks to Middlebury’s three. However, the Mammoths were unable to capitalize on their many quality chances. Representative of Amherst’s unlucky performance was sophomore striker Dane Lind’s chance in the 45th minute of play.
The Amherst men’s soccer team kicked off its 2017 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bowdoin on Saturday, Sept. 9. After 90 minutes of even, physical play, it was a penalty kick awarded in the first half that allowed the Mammoths to eke out the result.
In the 24th minute, the Polar Bears were called for a handball in their own 18-yard box, and junior forward Fikayo Ajayi stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick.
With 10 of last year seniors having graduated, seven of whom were starters, the Amherst men’s soccer team will have many new faces in their lineup this year.
Perhaps most notably, the Mammoths will have to find replacements for their entire back line of Jackson Lehnhart ’17, Cameron Bean ’17, Justin Aoyama ’17 and Rohan Sood ’17, the backbone of a dominant defense.
However, despite dramatic turnover, the squad feels confident that it will continue the program’s winning legacy.
After dropping their series against Middlebury two games to one on April 7-8, Amherst baseball rebounded in a big way with a 4-1 week that featured a three-game sweep of archrival Williams.
The team defeated Eastern Connecticut State on Thursday before claiming the series against the Ephs. No. 21 Salve Regina then halted this winning streak with a 4-1 win over the Mammoths.
With these results, the team’s record now stands at 10-10 (4-2 NESCAC).
Facing some tough opponents both in and out of conference, the Amherst baseball team went 1-4 this past week to bring their overall record to 6-9.
The Mammoths suffered a tough week on the diamond as they dropped two non-conference matchups before losing a NESCAC series to the Middlebury Panthers. Amherst kept it close with Midd, taking one of the three-game series before dropping the next two to the conference foes.
After receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament, the Amherst men’s basketball team concluded their season with a heartbreaking 69-66 first-round loss to Keene State College on Friday, March 3.
The loss marks the first time in eight years that the purple and white have failed to advance to the round of 32.
Aware of the tournament’s single elimination format, both sides came out hard in the first half. Neither team distinguished themselves in the opening minutes, as no lead exceeded four points.
