After two semesters, 26 issues and countless hours spent editing, this is my final issue as editor-in-chief of The Amherst Student. I’ve been fortunate to work with a dedicated staff throughout the duration of my time with this paper. We’ve had designers, writers and publishers who have endless talents; from the section editors who meticulously edit sports stories to the publishers who graciously donate their time and ensure our subscribers receive the paper each week.
Chief Diversity Officer Norm Jones announced the hiring of Bulaong Ramiz as the new director of the Multicultural Resource Center in an email to the college community on August 16. Jones also announced the creation of the Resource Center Team, which will include directors and student staff from the Multicultural Resource Center, Queer Resource Center and Women’s and Gender Center.
The Amherst women’s indoor track team kicked off its regular season competition this past weekend, traveling to Northampton for the Smith College Invitational Meet.
Sophomore Becki Golia highlighted the day for Amherst, earning the team’s only first-place finish of the meet. She took first in the high jump posting a 1.62-meter jump.
The purple and white competitors performed well in field events. Louise Atadja ’16 took 16th overall, jumping 4.65 meters.
The men’s swimming and diving team opened their season on Saturday, Nov. 21 with a decisive victory over NESCAC foe Colby and followed up their impressive opener with another conference victory against Wesleyan.
In their meet against Colby, the purple and white picked up their first win by way of a 147-119 score. The team took first place in 11 total events to earn the victory.
Mohamed Hussein ’18 took first place overall for the fifth time this season, remaining unbeaten against Div. III competition this season. His performance, along with the other competing Amherst runners, helped the purple and white take second place in a field of 55 teams at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet this past Saturday. Amherst narrowly missed nabbing the first-place title, falling by just one point to their rival.
Hussein took the first-place title by finishing the race in 24:39, an improvement upon his fifth place finish at the meet last year and time of 25:30.
Founded last spring, Amherst Athletes and Allies looks to foster more community and acceptance within the athletic community for athletes who identify as LGBTQ. The group’s recent “A Safe Space Includes” campaign has spotlighted teams and called on them to commit to serving as a haven for these athletes.
Steven Lucey ’17 helped lead the men’s cross country team to a first-place finish in the 40-team field at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship meet this past weekend.
The top five finishing teams at the race featured Amherst’s fellow NESCAC competition with Williams taking second place followed by Middlebury in third, Colby in fourth and Tufts rounding out the top five.
