The Amherst men’s tennis team opened its season with a spring break trip to Florida, where the purple and white faced a daunting slate of 12 matches in seven days. However, the purple and white was more than up to the challenge, posting an impressive 11-1 mark on the week, with the sole loss coming at the hands of No. 1 Emory University.

After finishing sixth at last weekend’s NESCAC tournament, the Amherst men’s squash team returned home to close out the regular season with matches against two non-conference foes.

However, the team’s recent run of poor form continued, with the purple and white falling to both Saint Lawrence and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This past weekend, the Amherst women’s squash team continued it’s up and down season at the Little III championships, first blowing out Wesleyan and then falling in a full-on sweep to archrival Williams.

Hosting the championships, the purple and white faced the Cardinals on Saturday morning. With Amherst ranked No. 17 nationally and Wesleyan being only No. 23 in the most recent polls, a victory for the purple and white seemed to be in the cards.

After playing only once in December, the Amherst men’s squash team’s schedule ramped up over interterm, with the purple and white taking on eight opponents in a span of less than two weeks. Having experienced both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, Amherst now owns a disappointing record of 4-5 overall after going only 3-5 over their busy holiday period.

In the team’s first match since its 9-0 rout of Brandeis in the first week of December, the purple and white fell victim to a 9-0 sweep by NESCAC rival Middlebury on Jan. 11.

With a full slate of games scheduled for the interterm period, the two-week period in mid-January seemed likely to define the mettle of this year’s edition of Amherst women’s squash. However, following a series of largely uncompetitive matches, in which the purple and white were both on the giving and receiving end of several blowouts, Amherst’s record stands at 5-5 with much still to be learned about the team.

The Amherst men’s squash team began its season in dominating fashion, posting a 9-0 home win in the team’s season-opener against Brandeis. With three-game sweeps on every single court, the purple and white showcased the depth of this year’s talented squad.

This past Saturday, the Amherst women’s indoor track and field team traveled to Northampton to open their season at the non-scoring Smith Invitational. Competing against a talented field of other schools, including Little Three rivals Wesleyan and Williams and to local foes Smith and Mount Holyoke as well several other New England schools, the purple and white boasted several impressive individual finishes.
