Still basking in the glow of last Sunday’s impressive win against Wesleyan, the Amherst women’s tennis team continued its recent run of strong conference play in a 6-3 victory over Tufts.
After last weekend’s mixed bag of results on the doubles courts, the purple and white recaptured their edge, taking a 2-1 lead into singles action after winning on the second and third doubles courts. While Amherst fell to Tufts’ number one doubles pairing 8-4, the second court tandem of Vickie Ip ’18 and Kelsey Chen ’19 easily handled their opponents en route to an 8-5 victory.
Fresh off of two straight road victories against conference opponents and a move to No. 5 in the nation, the Amherst women’s tennis team returned home last weekend to face off against Little Three rivals Williams and Wesleyan. Saturday’s action saw Amherst drop a heartbreaking, 6-3 contest against Williams, the second-ranked team in the nation, before rallying back to defeat the No. 8 Cardinals, 6-3, on Sunday.
For the second straight weekend, the Amherst women’s tennis team left home on Saturday and returned to campus with two victories.
With its wins over highly ranked regional rivals Massachusetts Institue of Technology and Bowdoin on Saturday and Sunday, the purple and white stretched its win streak to six matches and demonstrated that, once again, they will be a force in both NESCAC and national competition.
A week after opening NESCAC action with a resounding 9-0 win against Colby on their home court, the Amherst women’s tennis team maintained their strong start to the season with a pair of commanding victories against Brandeis and Babson in the annual Nor’Easter Bowl.
Amherst’s successful weekend started on April 1, when the sixth-ranked purple and white were pitted against the green and white of Babson. Although Babson entered the match ranked 28th in the country, they proved to be no match for the Amherst women, who dominated every aspect of the affair.
Fresh off a successful 2014-15 season that saw the team reach the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, the Amherst women’s tennis team entered the spring portion of the season ranked fourth in the nation. The team went 3-3 record on a spring break trip to Southern California in which they faced five top Division III programs and one Division II school.
