After last season’s remarkable successes, including a 26-6 overall record, a second place at the NESCAC tournament and a berth in the NCAA Division III final four, the Amherst men’s basketball team heads into this season with high hopes.
The Amherst women’s tennis team concluded its fall season, with a mixed bag of results at the Middlebury Invitational. The tournament pitted the young and untested purple and white against NESCAC rivals Middlebury and Williams, as well as local opponent Brandeis University, and Amherst finished with an overall record of 1-4-1.
In the team’s first competitive action of the season, Amherst men’s tennis demonstrated their immense potential this past weekend at the ITA Regional Championships. The purple and white had four participants in singles action, all four of who made the round of 32, and three doubles teams, two of which made it all the way to the Elite Eight.
This past weekend, the Amherst men’s golf team traveled to the picturesque Ralph Myhre golf course at Middlebury and returned with a third-place team finish as well as an individual win from first-year Cameron Clark. The team’s strong performance at the NESCAC championship qualifying tournament guaranteed them one of only four spots in next spring’s official championship, which will be hosted by Williams.
The Amherst men’s golf team closed out the fall portion of their schedule with a strong showing at the Manhattanville/NYU Fall Invitational over the Friday and Saturday of fall break. Building off of the momentum from a third-place finish at the NESCAC championships the weekend prior, the purple and white finished in fourth place at the tournament.
Amherst sent a completely different squad from the one that had impressed in Middlebury, with three first years and two juniors making the trek to the Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
On a crisp New England fall weekend, the Amherst men’s golf team traveled to NESCAC archrival Williams to take part in the Williams Fall Invitational. Pitted against a field of 18 other top New England programs, including several NESCAC foes, the purple and white finished a strong sixth with a two-day total of 625.
Last Saturday’s beautiful late afternoon sun provided a picturesque background for Amherst women’s tennis’ senior day, but the purple and white were unable to provide a victory befitting such a day, falling to Middlebury in a 6-3 heartbreaker.
