Several hundred people gathered in Kirby Theater last Sunday for the second annual TEDxAmherstCollege event.
A social justice reformer of juvenile policy, a paralympian and an Amherst College junior were among the speakers.
For college students across the nation who have too many interests and don’t know exactly which direction to take in the future, Melissa Kantor ’91 is a prime role model. Exploring a variety of interests that led her down many different paths, Kantor has pursued what she honestly finds the most happiness in doing. Today, this include being a young adult novelist of eight books, an English teacher and, most recently, dean of faculty at St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn Heights, New York.
Life at Amherst
This year Amherst College has expanded its Case Management Team, a division of the Office of Student Affairs that provides care to students who require support for non-academic matters.
Last year Associate Dean of Students Scott Howard was Amherst’s sole case manager. This year, Howard will be joined on the Case Management team by former Director of Residential Life Torin Moore and former Residential Life Area Coordinator Andy Tew.
Judy Yoo is a senior double majoring in Art History and Asian Languages and Civilizations. Her senior thesis focuses on the work of Japanese architect Ando Tadao. Her thesis advisor is Professor of the History of Art and Asian Languages and Civilizations Samuel Morse.
Q: What is your thesis about?
A: My thesis is on Ando Tadao, a contemporary Japanese architect. It examines Ando Tadao, but it also takes into consideration Japan’s modern architectural profession and its historical development because it seeks to understand how Ando has progressed in his profession.
