The last weekend of the regular season proved to be the most thrilling for the men’s basketball team, as they battled Williams and Middlebury on back-to-back nights with conference bragging rights and the NESCAC top seed at stake.

Bolstered by a dynamic power play and a balanced scoring attack, the men’s hockey team clinched the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC tournament with a pair of emphatic wins over Tufts (score 8-0) and Conn. College (5-2) last weekend. The Jeffs (18-3-1, 15-1-0 NESCAC) have now reeled off six straight victories, outscoring their opponents 30-5 in that span.
The recent surge has catapulted the Jeffs to No. 3 in the national polls — the highest such ranking in program history. In addition, Amherst has clinched home-ice advantage throughout the NESCAC tournament.
This week in NESCAC matchups, the women’s ice hockey team split a two-game series with Trinity.
The weekend began on Friday when the Jeffs hosted the Bantams and dropped the game 3-2.
Trinity’s Celia Colman-McGaw got things started in the first, tacking on the team’s first at 9:30 with an unassisted goal.
Trinity capitalized on an Amherst penalty when Macauly Bauer scored off of Payson Sword’s assist.
As sports have gained popularity and importance in society, watching sports has gone from a casual, passive form of entertainment to an obsession that plays a central role in the day-to-day mood of countless fans. We pour immense amounts of energy into rooting for our teams and hating others, and our enormous emotional investment in the fortunes of teams we have no direct connection to can seem irrational and ridiculous when looked at from a non-fan’s perspective.
The Jeffs had an enormously successful weekend at Boston Univ.’s Valentine Invitational, with 26 of 29 entries resulting in personal records. They faced stiff competition, as they raced against a number of Div. I teams.
Placing 11th overall, senior Ben Scheetz was the top Div. III finisher in the mile. He bested his own personal record by 11 seconds and was just .6 seconds off the school record, running 4:03.95. Pat Grimes ’13 was the next Jeff to finish the mile, placing 44th in the field of 244 with a time of 4:12.57. Andrew Erskine ’13 finished 19th of 73 in the 5k.
