After sneaking by Colby last weekend to keep their perfect season alive, the women’s basketball team returned to their more dominant ways with two more double-digits NESCAC wins this week, beating Williams, 80-58, and Trinity, 66-44.
Despite a rowdy Williams’ student section and early full-court press from the Ephs last Wednesday, Amherst took the lead early on after a Shannon Finucane ’12 triple that put them up 7-6 just three minutes in.
The women’s and men’s indoor track teams competed at the Terrier Invitational and Joe Donahue Invitational meets, respectively, with a number of successful individual performances.

The women competed at Boston Univ.’s Terrier Invitational meet.
Sophomore Naomi Bates broke the College’s record in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 25.71 was more than half a second faster than the previous 21-year-old record, set in 1991 by Tarsha Echols ’94. Bates also holds the school record in the 100-meter dash, a mark she set last year.
Both the women’s and men’s teams suffered hard-fought losses to MIT on Saturday.

The Lord Jeffs wrapped up an impressive winter break on Thursday, Jan. 19, after facing some of their toughest opponents to date and flaunting their scoring depth once again. In their last three weeks of play, Amherst went 6-1. Last night, they upset current first-place team and defending national champions Norwich Univ., earning them an overall record of 13-3 (7-1 NESCAC).
The women’s hockey team was dealt its first loss and tie this weekend to bring its season record to 5-1-1. The Jeffs faced two non-conference opponents this weekend in No. 3 Norwich and Manhattanville. On Friday Night, the team traveled up to Norwich, Vermont losing their first game of the season in a 4-3 heartbreaker. The Jeffs hosted Manhattanville at Orr Rink on Saturday, tying the score 2-2.
While the NBA season is still very young, there have already been a worrying amount of injuries. Russell Westbrook: Broken finger; Julius Randle: broken leg; Marcus Smart: sprained ankle and bone bruise … the list goes on and on. While some of these injuries can be attributed to freak accidents, others simply cannot. The sheer number of these injuries (ranging from mild to severe) beg the question: Is the NBA season too taxing?
Men
First-year Cameron Bahadori led the men’s squash team this past weekend at the Div. III Invitational held at Wesleyan. Bahadori advanced to the semifinals of the “B” Draw, topping Carlos Ames of Bates and Maxwell Bearse of Bowdoin before falling to Caran Aorora of Bates in a grueling five-game battle.
Darian Ehsani ’17 also competed in the “B” Draw and defeated David Bian of MIT in a competitive first-round match, 7-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5. After receiving a second-round bye, Ehsani then lost to Aorora of Bates.
