The Amherst baseball team had a Cinderella run last season, winning their first NESCAC Championship since 2005 and setting a new program record for wins with 27. After a promising 2012 campaign fell short, the Jeffs broke through to defeat Wesleyan for the 2013 NESCAC title, securing a spot in the NCAA Regional Championship in the process. Amherst saw its season come to a close, however, in a loss to third-ranked SUNY Cortland at the NY Regional. This season, the team is back with something to prove this spring with hopes of going all the way to the 2014 College World Series.
The Lady Jeffs came home champions of the Walker Cup this past weekend at the CSA National Team Championships at Princeton University. 43 teams participated, spread throughout six divisions; 17th-ranked Amherst competed in the C Division as the top seed.
Four Lady Jeffs squash players competed at the Div. III Individual Invitational hosted by Bowdoin last weekend, Feb. 7-9.
Amherst was one of 14 schools participated in the tournament. Ericka Robertson ’16, Arielle Lehman ’15 and Meyha Sud ’16 performed in the “A” bracket for the Jeffs, while Captain Evelyn Kramer ’14 played in the “B” division.
Lehman fell to Samantha Matos of Bates in the first round. After winning the first two games by a close score, 11-7, 15-13, Lehman couldn’t clinch a third and final game.
The last month had its ups and downs for the 17th-ranked Amherst women’s squash team. After a tough loss to Yale in December following their season opening victory, the Jeffs had a month off from competition before traveling to Middlebury in mid-January to kick off a long week of matches. The Jeffs fell to Middlebury in an 8-1 loss; their only victory coming from captain Lena Rice ’14 in the No. 9 spot.
The Amherst Women’s Squash Team swept Northeastern in its season opener this past Saturday. The Jeffs had an impressive start to the 2013-2014 season, only dropping one of twenty-eight games. Sophomore Ericka Robertson defeated Jenny Janeck of the Huskies in the number one spot with a 3-1 finish. The other members of the sophomore class had an impressive day as well. Meyha Sud ’16, Taryn Clary ’16, Khushy Aggarwal ’16, and Corri Johnson ’16 handily defeated their Husky opponents by a combined 110 points.
