For the second time in the last three seasons and the third time over the past five seasons, the men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end in the NCAA tournament on penalty kicks. This year, the Jeffs were unable to finish off the fifth-ranked Brandeis Judges in the NCAA third round following a 0-0 draw through two overtime periods. This came after the Jeffs’ fifth straight appearance in the Sweet 16 and Amherst’s ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. The Jeffs finished the 2014 season with a 14-1-6 overall record.
This past weekend, the Amherst men’s soccer advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament after victories on consecutive days in Amherst’s ninth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The weekend before the NCAA Tournament, the Jeffs advanced to their fourth straight NESCAC Championship game. However, this year the Jeffs came up just a bit short in their title defense as they sought to earn a fourth consecutive NESCAC Championship. The Jeffs, at 14-1-5, will now look to do more damage in the NCAA third round and beyond.
After a disappointing stretch for the men’s soccer team, the Jeffs responded in convincing fashion by closing out the regular season with a victory and by advancing to the NESCAC Semifinals for the fifth straight season. The Jeffs now stand at 12-1-3 overall and 7-1-2 in the NESCAC.
In their victory over Trinity, the Jeffs received a variety of scoring contributions from different members of the squad. In the process, the Jeffs also matched their season best of four goals in a game.
In a competitive non-conference game, the Amherst men’s soccer team’s late game heroics allowed the Jeffs to salvage a tie against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights. With the draw, the Jeffs stand at 10-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the NESCAC.
In the first half, the Jeffs appeared to control the pace and flow of the game, outshooting their opponents 7-0 over the initial 45 minutes. Yet, Amherst could not capitalize on any of these scoring opportunities and went into the halftime break tied at 0-0.
Dating back to Saturday, Oct. 11, the men’s soccer team went 2-1 in its past three games and currently sports a 10-1-2 record overall (6-1-2 in the NESCAC).
The Jeffs picked up a key NESCAC victory on Oct. 11th at home against the Colby Mules.
With three games against strong opponents in the past six days, the 11th-ranked men’s soccer team was dealt a tall order. However, the Jeffs attacked these challenges with full intensity and rose to the occasion, as they earned three key victories. Now, the Jeffs stand at 8-0-2 and sport a NESCAC unbeaten streak to 27 games. In addition, Amherst’s latest set of victories has pushed the Jeffs’ unbeaten record to 10 consecutive games.
With two games this past weekend, Amherst men’s soccer remained unbeaten on the season and extended their NESCAC unbeaten streak to 26 games. The weekend consisted of a 1-1 draw at Tufts on Saturday and a 1-0 victory over Bates on Sunday. Seven games into the season, the Jeffs stand at 5-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the NESCAC.
The Jumbos struck first against the Jeffs on Saturday, marking the first time in three weeks that the Jeffs trailed against an opponent.
