In a rematch of a double-overtime thriller from the 2013 NESCAC Semifinals, the men’s soccer team secured its first NESCAC victory of 2014 with a 1-0 victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears this past Saturday. With the win, the Jeffs improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
Throughout the first five minutes, the Jeffs had two shots and a corner kick but came up empty in those efforts. The Polar Bears responded with a corner kick and a shot attempt of their own, but goalkeeper Thomas Bull ’16 was there to make the save.
Men’s soccer returns to action in 2014 following a team trip to France this past summer and two consecutive Elite Eight appearances. Last season, the Jeffs finished with an 18-1-2 overall record and an 8-0-2 mark in NESCAC play. The team also won the 2013 NESCAC Championship and attained a no. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history.
With their 93-82 victory over Williams on Sunday, March 2 in the NESCAC Championship, the Jeffs triumphantly cut down the nets at LeFrak Gymnasium after earning their third straight NESCAC title and the seventh overall in program history. As a testament to Amherst’s outstanding performance in the NESCAC Tournament and strong overall body of work, the Jeffs were one of two teams, along with Emory University, awarded a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament (also for the third consecutive year), proving that the Jeffs are widely regarded as one of the nation’s top teams.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, Amherst men’s basketball bounced back from their regular season loss against Colby with an 82-72 triumph in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. With the victory, the Jeffs earned their 22nd win of the season and advanced to the NESCAC Semifinals.
On senior day at Lefrak Gymnasium this past Sunday, Amherst men’s basketball earned a commanding 84-67 victory over the Middlebury Panthers to close out the regular season. With the win, the Jeffs locked up the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Tournament and closed out the regular season with a 21-2 record, posting a 10-0 home record and 9-1 NESCAC record.
After a recent setback against a competitive Trinity team, the Amherst men’s basketball team responded well this past weekend at home against a pair of NESCAC opponents and on the Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup.
With the victories, the Jeffs now hold a three-game game winning streak, sport a 15-5 overall record (4-3 in the NESCAC), and will look to continue to do damage in the NESCAC after rising through the league standings this past week.
Following their victories against Williams and Trinity this past week, Amherst men’s basketball stands at 15-1 (5-0 NESCAC) and appears primed for another deep run in postseason play. No. 3-ranked Amherst currently sports an eight-game winning streak.
Most recently, Amherst defeated the Trinity Bantams (who entered play with an 11-5 record and a 3-1 NESCAC record) 67-61 in Hartford on Saturday. Senior guard David Kalema led the way with 18 points, and tied the game high in scoring with Trinity guard Jaquann Starks.
