The successful 2013 journey of Amherst men’s soccer through the NCAA Tournament came to an end on Sunday, Nov. 24 against Williams in the Elite Eight following a 1-0 loss in frigid conditions.
With the loss to Williams, Amherst fell one win short of reaching the Final Four for the second consecutive season.
The Jeffs also snapped a 40 game unbeaten streak that began at the start of the 2012 season following their last regulation loss in the 2011 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 against Stevens Institute.
With an offensive explosion for Men’s Soccer this past weekend in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the Jeffs return to the NCAA Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season.
The Jeffs made quick work of Bridgewater State in a 3-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Jeffs then cruised to a 5-0 victory over Gordon College the following afternoon. Amherst played both matches on Hitchcock Field and will continue to play at home this upcoming weekend.
On Sunday, Nov. 10, Men’s Soccer won the NESCAC Title for the third straight season and the fourth time in program history after defeating No. 3 Williams in a 1-0 battle. The previous day the top-seeded Jeffs knocked off No. 5 Bowdoin in double overtime by a score of 2-1 to advance to the NESCAC Finals. With their two most recent victories, the Jeffs extended their unbeaten streak to 37 games and now have their sights on making a deep run in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
The offense of the No. 1-ranked Amherst Men’s Soccer team was firing on all cylinders in two victories over the past week, as the Jeffs scored a total of eight goals and pushed their unbeaten streak to 35 games.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the Jeffs finished the regular season in style with a 4-0 victory over Trinity, followed by a strong second half performance against Hamilton that carried Amherst to a 4-1 victory in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Over the past two weekends, second-ranked Amherst men’s soccer picked up two more victories, as the Jeffs improved to 11-0-2 overall on the season and 7-0-2 in the NESCAC. The team further extended its unbeaten streak to 33 games, which dates back to the final game of the 2011 season.
This past weekend, Amherst Men’s Soccer travelled to Maine and notched back-to-back victories to extend their unbeaten streak to 31 games and improve their record to 9-0-2 (7-0-2 in the NESAC) on the season.
On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Jeffs faced a Colby team that was winless in the NESCAC entering play but had just come off a tough 1-0 loss in double overtime to Wesleyan and a dominant 5-0 victory in a non-conference matchup against Maine-Farmington in the week prior to the Jeffs-Mules game.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Amherst Men’s Soccer took on the Hamilton Continentals at Love Field in Clinton, New York. Although Amherst did not manage to come away with the victory, the Jeffs salvaged a 1-1 tie with Hamilton and extended their unbeaten streak to 29 games.
The Jeffs entered play at 7-0-1 overall (5-0-1 in the NESCAC) and the third-ranked team in the nation, while Hamilton came in at 2-2-2 overall (1-1-2 in the NESCAC). Amherst had won its past three matches, while Hamilton just came off a big 1-0 win the previous week against Wesleyan.
