After a solid 7-3 start in Florida, the Jeffs posted a strong regular season showing en route to their second consecutive NESCAC West Division Championship. For the most part, they featured a well-balanced attack of potent offense, consistent pitching and tight defense.

It was not the first undefeated season in program history, but it may well have been the most decisive. The 8-0 campaign of Coach E.J. Mills and company concluded memorably with a resounding 31-18 victory over host Williams. The road to that point, however, was a deceptively arduous one that the Jeffs traversed with skill, toughness and all-important luck.

Men

The men’s team extended its winning streak to eight by posting two more victories, the first against Tufts and the second against No. 22 Skidmore.

With a sweep of Bates over the weekend, the Jeffs kept on rolling, improving to 16-5 and remaining a perfect 6-0 in NESCAC play.

After an easy victory in a non-league tune-up against Castleton State (April 12), the Amherst squad on rested Friday and Saturday as they prepared to host the Bobcats. While Bates had not fared well in recent league play, they had just posted two resounding victories over Becker College and were looking to ride their momentum into the weekend doubleheader.

It’s only been four days, and we are already in disaster mode. That’s saying a lot, given that the Yankees are also 0-3 and that, at this time of year, that would usually be grounds for the talk-radio masses to cry, “It’s ovah! The Yankees are done!”

Really, though. This team headed north with question marks galore, and, after only one series, we can see exactly why.

Though all three games were decided by two runs or fewer, including an extra-inning affair Saturday night, the Jeffs managed three critical victories over archrival Williams and improved to 6-0 in NESCAC play.

Looking to return to the playoffs in 2012, the Jeffs have begun their season a solid 10-5 following a 7-3 Florida trip and a prompt three-game sweep of Hamilton.
