The fourth-ranked Amherst men’s tennis team picked up its first NESCAC victory of the season on March 29 against Tufts. The team’s success continued this past weekend, as the Jeffs won three more matches to extend their unbeaten streak to 10.

The fourth-ranked Amherst men’s tennis team began their spring season this past week in sunny California where they played 17 dual matches over the course of six days. With enough players to fill three squads, the Jeffs went 15-2 — losing only against Concordia and Claremont-Mudd Scripps.

“Our spring break trip was exhausting but rewarding. Since we only lost twice, I think it shows that we can compete with any team in the country. Personally, I played pretty well, but I’m just glad Coach gave me a chance to play,” Phillip Qu ’16 remarked.

The Amherst men’s golf team will be traveling to North Carolina for spring break to train at Pinehurst Golf Resort in preparation for their upcoming season. The team, led by senior captains, Erik Hansen and Nicholas Koh, have four competitions to look forward to this spring, culminating in the NESCAC Championships at the end of April.

After growing up in Northampton, Mass., attending Northampton High School, doing a post-grad year at Deerfield Academy and then winning an NCAA Div. III Championship playing basketball at Amherst College, it’s safe to say that Willy Workman ’13 is no stranger to the Pioneer Valley.

Over his four years as a Lord Jeff, Workman undoubtedly became a household name and prominent figure on campus, as many students can still recall the image of him walking around in his Amherst sweats, Adidas sandals with socks and classic purple Beats slung around his neck.

Coming off a solid 2013 season that ended with a loss in the NCAA semifinals against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Amherst men’s tennis team hopes to make another title run this year.

The Amherst women’s tennis team ended their fall season with an extremely successful showing in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), where they competed under a unique format. Each school sent up to five doubles teams, and matches between schools consisted of one doubles match and two singles matches played by each doubles partner.

The Amherst men’s tennis team had a busy yet extremely successful fall break weekend. The Jeff split squads with one playing two dual matches against Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon and the other played at Bates in the Wallach Invitational.

Going into Saturday, the Jeffs knew they were going to face some tough competition. After doubles play, the team was extremely satisfied with their results, and it proved to be the difference in the match. The Jeffs won by an overall match score of 5-4.
