Perhaps still suffering from an NCAA Frozen Four hangover last winter, the men’s hockey team continued its maddeningly inconsistent season by splitting a home doubleheader this past weekend. The Jeffs posted a solid 3-1 win over Wesleyan on Friday night before collapsing in a 7-4 loss to Trinity on Saturday.
The weekend’s results moved the Jeffs’ record to 11-5-2 (7-4-1 NESCAC), dropping Amherst to fifth place in the NESCAC standings, behind Bowdoin, Williams, Middlebury and Trinity.
While most of their peers were enjoying a restful winter break, the men’s basketball team got down to business over the holidays. After starting their season on a strong note, winning their first five pre-season games, the Jeffs looked to be in a good place heading into the start of the regular season.
As the start of the new semester begins, the men’s and women’s squash teams head into the final stretches of what have been equally dramatic and unexpected seasons. The men, battling injuries all season, currently sit at 7-11 while the women, led by five first-year players, own an impressive 10-6 record and sit at 16th in the country — their highest position in recent Amherst squash history.

Facing a historic performance from a stellar MIT squad, the Jeffs ultimately fell short, 178-116, despite several strong individual showings. The Engineers’ start was nearly impossible to overcome: MIT’s team of Bo Mattix, Michael Liao, Wyatt Ubellacker and Craig Cheney broke the pool record with a time of 1:33.42 in the 200 medley relay.
