In the wake of the Donald Sterling scandal last spring, the NBA and the public have become much more sensitive to racism in sports culture. The question is: have we gone too far?

As if the appraisals of Derek Jeter’s legacy hadn’t already reached a fever pitch, the Yankees’ shortstop ended his last game at Yankee stadium with a walk-off single, providing everyone with a new reason to discuss how good he really was. Jeter suffered the misfortune of playing in an era when the popular film Moneyball popularized sabermetrics. Pre-sabermetrics, players were generally judged on whether they hit round career numbers, (3,000 hits or 500 home runs) and anecdotally.

The men’s golf team finished seventh this past weekend in the NESCAC Qualifier held at Hamilton. Middlebury won the weekend with a total score of 599, followed by Hamilton, Trinity and Williams. These four teams advanced to play for the NESCAC championship this weekend.

Josh Moser ’15 had Amherst’s lowest score of the contest, with a two-day total of 157. First-year Dan Langa also had a solid performance, as he shot 80 on both days. Jarvis Sill ’15 finished six strokes behind him, while Sam Procter ’18 and Liam Fine ’17 took the final two scoring spots.

The women’s golf team snagged a third place finish over the weekend at the Middlebury Invitational hosted at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course. The rival Ephs took first place with a two-day score of 619, while Amherst totaled 672 for the weekend.

“The team is excited we were able to earn third place and not drop in our standing after day one,” said head coach Michelle Morgan. “I think each play left everything they had on the course. Their mental games are getting stronger each time they step on the course.”

The Amherst women’s soccer team (5-1-1) capped off an impressive week with a pair of wins in their weekend double header. On Wednesday, the Jeffs topped undefeated Springfield College (3-1-1) for a 1-0 road victory. First-year and third leading scorer in the NESCAC Hannah Guzzi proved her dominance in the front field yet again. After a scoreless first half, Amherst ended the drought in the 69th minute on a Guzzi goal. Megan Kim ’16 recorded the assist.

After a three-year hiatus from Pratt Pool, the Amherst Club Water Polo Team hosted the UMass, Williams, Tufts and U.S. Coast Guard Academy teams at a tournament this past weekend.

The tournament was in a round robin format with each of the five teams playing two games on Saturday and Sunday.
The Yo-Ho Penguins (the water polo team’s official mascot since 1984) are coming off of a second-place finish in last year’s edition of the North Atlantic Tourney.

The women’s volleyball team kicked off NESCAC play this weekend with games away at Trinity on Friday and Wesleyan on Saturday. The Firedogs claimed both games in straight sets, continuing the great form they showed off in the JWU invitational and jumping to the head of the NESCAC standings.
