The Amherst women’s lacrosse team dropped two NESCAC contests this past week against Wesleyan and Colby.
On Wednesday, April 5, the Mammoths traveled to Middletown, Conn. for a midweek conference match-up against Wesleyan. Despite a nine-save effort from goalie Kyra Gardner ’18, Amherst was unable to generate enough of an offensive presence to bring home a win on the road.
The Amherst women’s lacrosse team went 1-1 over the past week, dominating out-of-conference foe Babson College before enduring a tought loss to No. 4 Middlebury College.
In a frigid, mid-week game, the Mammoths blanked the Beavers in an impressive 11-0 win.
Junior Kyra Gardner was a force in net, coming up with eight saves and notching her first shutout of the season. Claire Cagnassola ’17 led the 11-goal effort with four tallies of her own.
The Amherst women’s lacrosse team finished out the past two weeks with a 3-1 record. Claire Cagnassola ’17 led the team over break, scoring six goals and four assists while garnering NESCAC player of the week honors for the week of March 7.
The purple and white’s first victory came during a midweek away game against the Keene State Owls on Wednesday, March 8. Amherst dominated the host team for the entirety of the game for a 16-3 win.
After several weeks of preseason, the Amherst women’s lacrosse team opened their season against NESCAC rival Bowdoin in Brunswick, ME. Originally scheduled for Saturday, March 4, the game was moved to Sunday due to dangerously cold temperatures on Saturday. No. 15 Amherst dropped a hard-fought battle to the Polar Bears in a 7-6 overtime loss.
Bowdoin was first to strike with a goal off a free position shot from senior Mettler Growney. From that point forward, the game was an exciting back-and-forth match up.
This past Sunday, members of the Amherst women’s swim and dive team had one last chance to meet NCAA Division III qualifying standards at the February Invite hosted by Wesleyan in Middletown, Conn.
At the meet, three female swimmers for the purple and white managed to glide to national qualifying times. With a final time of 56.88 in the 100-meter fly, Geralyn Lam ’18 managed to extend her season and earn herself a spot on the Amherst squad headed to Texas for the national championship.
After the grueling, three-day long NESCAC Championship at Bowdoin in Brunswick, Maine, the Amherst women’s swim team claimed second in the conference with a total of 1,367 points. The purple and white finished behind archrival Williams, who captured their fourth consecutive conference title with a total of 1,856 points.
The Amherst women’s swim and dive team had an eventful weekend, taking on the No. 9 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Cambridge, and then traveling to Springfield the following day to face the Springfield College Pride.
In their Saturday meet against the Engineers, the eighth-ranked purple and white topped the competition 171.5-128.5.
The 200-yard medley relay team comprised of Stephanie Moriarty ’18, Katie Smith ’19, Geralyn Lam ’18 and Ingrid Shu ’20 collected the first points of the meet with a winning time of 1:47.88.
