The Amherst volleyball team returned to action this week, competing in four exciting matches. In a midweek contest, the purple and white took on Colby-Sawyer in LeFrak Gymnasium. Amherst trounced the Chargers in three sets (25-14, 25-10, 25-18).
Maggie Danner ’17 continued her dominance on the court with a 16-kill effort. Danner, and Annika Reczek ’18 had a block apiece. Kate Bres ’17 also contributed significantly on the offensive end with a total of 28 assists on the day.

The Amherst volleyball team had a busy week with three matches including its first two conference games of the season. This past week’s action started with a midweek match against Western New England University. The purple and white swept the Golden Bears (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) in the Wednesday night match-up.

The Amherst volleyball team opened its season this past weekend in Providence, Rhode Island at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Johnson and Wales University. In the three-game tournament, the purple and white finished 2-1. After dropping a disappointing first match to Johnson and Wales 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-22), the Amherst women rallied and went on to sweep both Bridgewater State and Gordon.

The Amherst field hockey team enters the 2016 season with 17 returning players after graduating five seniors, including second team All-American midfielder Annie Turnbull ’16. The purple and white finished the 2015 season 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the perennially competitive NESCAC. Under the leadership of tri-captains Katie Paolano ’16, Annika Nygren ’16 and Turnbull, the Amherst women advanced to the semifinal of the NESCAC tournament where they fell to ultimate NESCAC champion Bowdoin.

Although the Amherst women dropped their last regular season game this past Wednesday, April 27 against Trinity, they routed Hamilton, 15-5, on Saturday, April 30, in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC championship.

Trinity took an early five-goal lead in the first half and despite picking up some momentum in the second half, the purple and white were unable to make up the deficit.

Trinity defender Ashley Stewart led the Bantams’ strong defensive effort, finishing with a game-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls.

It was an action packed week for the Amherst men’s golf team. The team hosted the Little Three Championship this past Wednesday, April 20 and then traveled to Williamstown, Massachusetts for the weekend to compete at the Williams Spring Invitational.

The women’s lacrosse team continued its hot streak on Senior Day this past Saturday, April 16. A thrilling 7-6 triumph over Tufts marked the purple and white’s fourth consecutive win.

Hanna Krueger ’17 opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal less than five minutes into the first half. Tufts’ Caroline Ross provided the equalizer soon after. Rachel Passarelli ’16 netted the man-up goal less than a minute after Ross. The game remained tight with Kate Wyeth ’17 notching Amherst’s third and final goal of the half.
