The Amherst women’s soccer team had an action-packed week with three matches in a seven-day span. The Mammoths went 1-2 on the week, dropping their record to 3-2 for the season (1-1 NESCAC).
This week, the Amherst women’s hockey team returned to action and picked up two important wins against NESCAC rival Trinity to push the team’s overall record to 4-2.
In their first contest against the Bantams, the Mammoths used a dominant offensive performance to leave the ice with an impressive 6-2 win. Following a scoreless first period, Trinity was the first team to get on the board, scoring in the sixth minute of the second period during a power play stemming from an Amherst hooking penalty.
The Amherst women’s soccer team opened the 2017 season with a bang, tallying a total of 11 goals in only two games. With wins against Mount Holyoke and NESCAC rival Bowdoin, their record stands at 2-0 overall (1-0 NESCAC).
On a humid Thursday night under the lights at Mount Holyoke, the Mammoths completely dominated the Lyons in the 90-minute match. By the time the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the first half, Amherst already led the home team 8-0.
Amherst women’s soccer will return to Hitchcock Field this season as the defending NESCAC champions.
The Mammoths had an impressive 2016 season, finishing with a 17-3-1 record and advancing to the third round of the NCAA Championship before falling to William Smith College.
Several stars emerged for the Amherst women in the course of the team’s run of dominance last season, with four Mammoths named to All-NESCAC teams.
The Amherst women’s lacrosse team collected a huge 9-6 victory this past Saturday against archrival Williams College, a crucial win as it secured the Mammoths a spot in the upcoming NESCAC tournament.
Although Amherst was on the attack for majority of the first half, an impressive performance from Williams goalie Margaret Draper kept the Mammoths at bay for large swathes of the game.
However, senior Claire Cagnassola opened the scoring a little less than ten minutes into the half, capitalizing on an assist from Annie Cohen ’19.
After playing just three games the previous week, the Amherst baseball team had a full schedule this week, playing a total of five games. The first game of the grueling week was on the road against Roger Williams University on Wednesday, April 18.
The Amherst women’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game slide with a mid-week win over Connecticut College before dropping a tightly contested match against 20th-ranked Tufts.
On Tuesday, April 11, the Mammoths traveled to New London, Conn. to face a Camels team desperate for its first NESCAC win. However, Conn. College was unable to secure the victory it was looking for as Amherst cruised to a 13-2 win.
