When I sat in the crowded Merrill 1 lecture room early in the fall for the Association of Amherst Student’s budgetary committee’s mandatory introductory meeting, I found myself annoyed when Treasurer Paul Gramieri ’17 announced new caps on food spending by insinuating that if a club’s event needed food to get people to go to it, it probably wasn’t a very good event. I probably muttered something to myself about neoliberalism or austerity.
Despite a stellar effort from Amherst goalie Christy Forrest ’16, the women’s lacrosse team fell to Middlebury, 8-7, at Pratt Field on Saturday, April 2 in a thrilling overtime game. The game remained tight throughout its duration. Middlebury attacker Bridget Instrum opened up the scoring a little under six minutes into the first half. Amherst’s Claire Cagnassola ’17 was quick to respond and found the back of the Middlebury net just over a minute later. Cagnassola continued the offensive momentum, scoring the purple and white’s second goal at the 16:34 mark to give Amherst a 2-1 lead.
The Amherst baseball team faced a busy schedule last week, coming away with three wins and one loss. They started with a comeback win over Springfield College on Wednesday, March 30, 10-7.
Outfielder Anthony Spina ’17 was named NESCAC player of the week after going 7-for-14 from the plate along with .611 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage. Spina also scored six runs to go along with three RBIs and three stolen bases for the week.
The Amherst men’s track and field team finished their season opener at Tufts’s Snowflake Invitational in seventh place on Friday, April 1.
In the 100-meter dash, Aziz Khan ’18 finished in sixth place with a time of 11.66, an effort that earned three points for the team as a whole.
In the 200-meter dash, David Ingraham ’18 earned fourth place with a time of 23.47, which contributed five points to the team total. He also ran the 400-meter dash in which he finished in eighth place with a time of 53.35.
A week after opening NESCAC action with a resounding 9-0 win against Colby on their home court, the Amherst women’s tennis team maintained their strong start to the season with a pair of commanding victories against Brandeis and Babson in the annual Nor’Easter Bowl.
Amherst’s successful weekend started on April 1, when the sixth-ranked purple and white were pitted against the green and white of Babson. Although Babson entered the match ranked 28th in the country, they proved to be no match for the Amherst women, who dominated every aspect of the affair.
Traveling to Tufts for the Snowflake Classic last Saturday afternoon, the Amherst women’s outdoor track and field team tallied 31 points to place seventh overall in the 15-team field.
Senior captain Victoria Hensley impressed in the 400-meter dash, claiming third with a mark of 1:00.28. Julia Asin ’19 was the next purple and white runner to finish, placing 10th in the event (1:03.09).
Gabby Bishop ’18 placed 16th overall in the 37-woman 100-meter dash with a time of 13.99. Crossing the finish line in 28.25, Katherine Holm ’19 finished 18th in the 200-meter dash.
Winning three of their four scheduled home games in the past week, the softball team has been as successful as they have been busy.
After splitting Wednesday’s doubleheader with Worchester Polytechnic Institute, the purple and white destroyed NESCAC rival Middlebury in the first two games of the three-game series with the Panthers. The outcome of the final game remains to be seen, as it was suspended after five innings due to darkness after several rain delays and is to be completed at a later date.
