Robert Griffin III’s knee. Chip Kelly’s offense. The sports world buzzed about those topics before Monday night’s matchup between the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles. Robert Griffin III didn’t have a triumphant return from ACL surgery like Adrian Peterson last year. In fact, he looked uncomfortable in the pocket facing live action for the first time since the Redskins’ Jan. 9 loss to the Seahawks.
Amherst College’s Pratt Field renovation project began in the winter of 2012 is set to be completed in the very near future, completing a makeover that will upgrade the fieldhouse, grandstands and track of the third-oldest NCAA football field in the country.
The Firedogs showed their talent and validated high expectations surrounding the program after opening their season with a second place finish at the Springfield College Invitational over the weekend. Coach Sue Everden believes that the team needs more time together to become a great team, but was very excited about the team’s g rowth over the course of the weekend.
“With only a week of practice before our first outing vs. very good competition, the Amherst squad needed and will continue to need more game time to gel,” Everden said.
Coming off an impressive spring season, the Amherst men’s golf team got off to a promising start to its fall 2013 season at the Trinity Invitational this past weekend. Placing second of nine teams overall, the Jeffs wasted no time proving that they are ready to compete. Junior Josh Moser led the Jeffs with a two-round score of 151, followed by senior captain Nicholas Koh with a two-round score of 155. The two upperclassmen finished fifth and ninth overall, respectively.

Confronting unfamiliar adversity in a rebuilding year — having lost five of 11 starters from last season — the men’s soccer team gritted out a 2-1 overtime victory over Middlebury this Saturday in the NESCAC opener.
After falling behind 1-0 on a questionable penalty kick late in the first half, the Jeffs responded with a spectacular goal from Greg Singer ’16 in the 64th minute, before Nico Pascual-Leone ’15 netted the decisive tally 3:34 into overtime.
The arrival of the Class of 2017 can only mean that fall has arrived, and, as surely as the foliage will soon change colors, the Jeffs will soon return to doing what they do best: dominating the NESCAC. 2012-13 was another banner year for Amherst athletics, complete with the championship finishes (including a national title for the Men’s Basketball team) that have come to be commonplace in recent years. Still, if it’s possible to top last year’s success, we have every reason to believe that this year’s outfits — led, of course, by the Class of 2014 — will find a way.
