The Amherst track & field team competed at the NESCAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday, April 27 at Tufts Univ. The men finished sixth out of 13 teams, while the women were eighth out of 11. Host Tufts captured the team title on both sides.
Men
In their final event of the 2013 season, the Men’s golf team suffered a heartbreaking loss at the Little Three Championship last Wednesday.
Competing against Wesleyan and Williams in a distinctive one-day format, Amherst finished the day tied with their archrivals at six points apiece, but lost the title based on a tiebreaker. It was a disappointing finish for the Jeffs, who broke the Ephs’ 14-year Little Three winning streak last season and were looking to build a streak of their own.
Coming into the weekend series with Wesleyan, it wasn’t much of a secret that the Jeffs owned one of the toughest pitching staffs in the league.
On March 26, Amherst LEADS hosted the “Caring Deeply” event as part of its First-Year Initiative Program. Over 150 student-athletes sat captivated in O’Connor Commons as two-time Ugandan Olympic runner Julius Achon shared his powerful life story of struggle, strength and athletic accolades. Perhaps his most admirable accomplishment, however, is the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund (AUCF), a charity which the humanitarian founded that runs an orphanage and medical center in the Otuke District of Northern Uganda.
Heading into the NESCAC quarterfinals as the fifth seed, the Amherst Women’s Lacrosse team suffered a tough loss to fourth-seeded Colby over the weekend in Waterville, Maine. Two four-goal runs in the second half helped the Mules to an 11-3 victory over No. 12 Amherst, who also fell to No. 1 Trinity, 11-6, last Tuesday. Finishing 9-6 overall, the team hopes to receive at-large bid to the NCAA Championship tournament when the 32-team field is announced on Sunday.
The Amherst track & field teams traveled to Williams this past Saturday to compete in the Little III Championships. The men had a strong second place showing with a total of 111 points ahead of Wesleyan (97) but behind Williams (169). The women fell short, only totaling 70 points, behind both Williams (187) and Wesleyan (105).
Men’s
Behind a breakout performance from sophomore Jarvis Sill, the men’s golf team finished sixth at the Williams Spring Invitational last weekend.
Played at the Taconic Golf Club, cold and windy conditions prevailed in Williamstown. The par 71 course played very tough, as no player broke par on either day. The low score on Saturday was a 4-over 75, though the course was even harder on Sunday with the low posted at a 6-over 77.
