After a very successful regular season, the Amherst women’s hockey team lost their NESCAC quarterfinal match in a heartbreaker against Colby College this past Saturday. Despite outshooting the Mules, the Jeffs fell 3-2 after conceding a goal with 1:18 remaining in the final period. With Amherst seeded second in the NESCAC and Colby seeded seventh, the Jeffs’ loss was not the only upset in the quarterfinal matches this weekend, as top seed and fourth in the nation Middlebury fell to the eighth seed of the tournament, Conn. College.
This weekend marked the end of the regular season for the Amherst women’s hockey team. The Jeffs traveled to Brunswick, Maine to face Bowdoin in a two game series. 10th-ranked Amherst succeeded in preserving the second seed in the NESCAC after going 1-1 on the weekend. The Jeffs departed Brunswick with a 13-6-5 overall record and a 9-3-4 mark in the conference.
The Amherst women’s hockey team capped off its final home series of the regular season with a 3-1 win and a 2-2 tie against Trinity College. The weekend’s results improved the 10th-ranked Jeffs to an overall record of 12-5-5. They are now 8-2-4 in the NESCAC, which is good enough for second place behind Midd.
This past weekend the 10th-ranked Amherst women’s hockey team took on NESCAC archrival Williams College in a two game series.
The Jeffs came away with a 6-2 win on Friday and a 2-2 tie on Saturday that leaves them with an 11-5-4 record overall and a 7-2-3 record in the NESCAC. They are now seated third in the conference, just behind Middlebury and Williams.
“We had a good weekend. Williams is a very strong team, and to come away with three out of four points on the road is a good weekend,” Coach Matthews said.
This past week the Amherst women’s hockey team lost two out of three games, dropping their record to 10-5-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the NESCAC.
On Jan. 28, the 10th-ranked Jeffs competed against No. 4 Norwich in a rematch of the game that took place right before interterm. In the Dec. 8 matchup the Jeffs fell 4-3, losing with just 1:47 left in regulation. This time the Jeffs again fell by just one goal, losing 2-1.
The Amherst women’s hockey team has had a demanding and successful string of games over the past month, compiling an impressive record of 9-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the NESCAC.
Just before break, the No. 9 Jeffs took on No. 4 Norwich Univ. and lost a heartbreaker 4-3 after conceding a goal with just 1:47 left in regulation.
“It was our fourth game in nine days, all against top ten teams… I believe it could have gone either way, and despite the tough 4-3 loss, our squad will be better for it in the long run,” Coach Matthews noted.
The Amherst women’s ice hockey team has looked strong throughout the first couple weeks of the season with a record to 3-0-1 in the NESCAC and 3-1-2 overall.
Adding to the NESCAC standings were two games against little-three rival, Wesleyan Univ. In their first match-up 3-2, the Jeffs garnished their 20th straight win over the Cardinals, who have not beaten the Jeffs since the 2003 season.
