In January, British newspaper The Guardian published an article titled “Rock music’s death knell has yet to toll.” By my own estimation, rock music, if not dead, is at least flat lining in popularity. But I don’t blame people who choose to listen to pop over rock today.
After an impressive 7-0 start to the season, the men’s lacrosse team stumbled to a pair of losses last week, falling to No. 15 Wesleyan 6-3 before suffering a shock 12-6 defeat to Hamilton on Saturday.
The Jeffs (7-2, 3-2 NESCAC) saw their national ranking plummet from No. 3 to No. 14, and now face an uphill climb in their pursuit of the NESCAC’s top seed.
Amherst maintained its undefeated record through Spring Break, piling up victories over Bowdoin, Marywood, Eastern Connecticut State and Nazareth in the off-week to push its season record to 7-0.
Hamilton snapped the women’s lacrosse team’s five-game winning streak on Saturday. The Jeffs bested Bowdoin before spring break, defeated Buffalo State and William Smith during a spring break trip to Florida, and took down Springfield before falling to the Continentals.
The 16th-ranked Jeffs upset No. 5 Bowdoin with an 8-5 victory on Saturday, March 17.
Marta Randall ’13 notched the first goal of the game within the first five minutes, scoring on a free-position attempt. Bowdoin responded two minutes later to tie the score at one.
Looking to return to the playoffs in 2012, the Jeffs have begun their season a solid 10-5 following a 7-3 Florida trip and a prompt three-game sweep of Hamilton.
The women’s softball team extended its record-breaking win streak to 17 on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of rival Williams to remain undefeated in the NESCAC. Last Friday, the Lord Jeffs used a late three-run homer to defeat the Ephs on the road, after grabbing both wins in a double header against Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday.
While the emotional and classy press conference announcing the release of Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts immediately led to myriad musings about possible destinations for the future Hall-of-Famer, it still could not cast aside the grim shadow caused by the alleged New Orleans Saints’ bounty program.
In fact, none of the usual NFL offseason obsessions, such as free agency or April’s NFL Draft, have managed to block the bounty program from the forefront of the sports world.
Women
After falling just short of a National Championship last season, the women’s tennis team opened their 2012 campaign in great form over spring break. The Lady Jeffs, who finished as the NCAA runner-up last year, looked very strong and were undefeated in their four contests. They have since begun their NESCAC season, traveling to Williams this past weekend where they lost a closely fought battle.
